Denzel Washington, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated icons, just stunned fans with a confession no one saw coming: he doesn’t watch movies. Not his own, not anyone else’s.
The shocking revelation came during a GQ interview alongside acclaimed director Spike Lee and rapper-turned-actor A$AP Rocky, as the trio promoted their highly anticipated new film, Highest 2 Lowest. When asked about his relationship with cinema, Washington, 70, didn’t hold back.
“I don’t watch movies, man. I really don’t,” he admitted, leaving his collaborators roaring with laughter. “I’m just being honest with you! I don’t watch movies! I don’t go to the movies. I don’t watch movies.”
When A$AP Rocky pressed him, asking if years of making films had worn him out, the two-time Oscar winner gave a blunt response: “Probably. You know, I’m tired of movies. I’ve made too many.”
And he’s not exaggerating. Since his big-screen debut in the 1981 comedy Carbon Copy, Washington has starred in over 40 films, carving out a reputation as one of the greatest actors of his generation. From Training Day to Fences, his career has been a masterclass in range and power. He’s also built an acclaimed stage résumé and earned countless awards, including two Oscars and three Golden Globes.
Washington’s confession is especially shocking given his deep ties to director Spike Lee. The pair have collaborated on five projects over the decades, including the 1992 classic Malcolm X, which earned Washington an Oscar nomination for Best Actor and cemented his place in cinematic history.
Now, Washington and Lee are reuniting for Highest 2 Lowest, an English-language remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 masterpiece High and Low. The film marks Washington’s return to the big screen after a string of critically acclaimed performances, but his startling indifference toward watching movies has fans asking one big question:
How can one of Hollywood’s greatest living actors be “tired” of the very thing that made him a legend?
Whether you find his stance relatable or baffling, one thing’s for sure — Washington’s words have set social media on fire, with fans debating whether decades in the industry can really burn someone out completely.
