Authorities have confirmed that the search for 32-year-old Jacob Angeles, who vanished after attending the Michigan Renaissance Festival, has ended in heartbreak. Angeles’ body was discovered in Crawford County days after his disappearance, police announced Friday.
The Rockwood Police Department said foul play is not suspected but offered few details. “As this is still an active investigation, we cannot comment further on the circumstances regarding the discovery of his body,” officials stated. “The Rockwood Police Department expresses its most sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family, and we ask that the public respect their privacy in this very difficult time.”
Angeles was last seen on August 16 at the Renaissance Festival grounds in Holly, Michigan — an event that attracts tens of thousands of visitors each summer. Friends grew concerned when he failed to return home and didn’t show up for his work shift that afternoon.
Police tracked his vehicle, a silver 2006 Jeep Commander, through a Flock Safety license plate reader near the I-675 ramp leading to northbound I-75 the same day he disappeared. Despite intensive searches, Angeles remained missing for two days. A statewide missing persons notice was issued on August 18.
The investigation drew support from numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Oakland, Crawford, and Roscommon County Sheriff’s Offices, along with multiple local police departments. Search teams scoured wooded areas, highways, and festival grounds before the grim discovery in Crawford County.
The Michigan Renaissance Festival, which runs weekends through September 28, has been rocked by the news. While organizers haven’t released a statement, several festivalgoers expressed disbelief online.
“It’s terrifying,” wrote one attendee in a local Facebook group. “You come here for fun and fantasy, and suddenly there’s a real-life tragedy connected to it.”
Authorities continue to investigate how Angeles ended up nearly 200 miles north of where he was last seen.
