Former Mastodon lead guitarist Brent Hinds has tragically died at the age of 51 after a horrific motorcycle crash in Atlanta.
According to Atlanta Police, Hinds was riding his Harley Davidson late Wednesday night when a BMW SUV turned left in front of him, causing a violent collision near Boulevard. First responders found the legendary guitarist unresponsive at the scene. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at Grady Marcus Trauma Center at 9:28 p.m.
Medical reports revealed Hinds suffered a severe leg fracture, multiple lacerations, and abrasions. Fulton County’s medical examiner has confirmed his death.
Brent Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 alongside Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor. Over the years, the Atlanta-based band became a force in the heavy metal world, earning critical acclaim with their 2002 debut album Remission and releasing eight studio albums to date. Hinds departed the band in March of this year.
Mastodon released a heartbreaking statement on Instagram: “We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force.”
Fans across the world have flooded social media with tributes. One wrote, “Rest in peace. So privileged I got to see you play live. Thank you for your music, Brent.” Another added, “His riffs will always be my favorite… one of the all-time greats.”
Hinds’ death marks a devastating loss for the heavy metal community. His legacy as one of rock’s most innovative guitarists will continue to inspire generations to come.
