A Condor Airlines flight turned into a nightmare in the skies when flames began spewing from one of its engines just moments after takeoff, sending terrified passengers into panic mode.

The Boeing 757-300 had lifted off from Corfu’s Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport on its way to Düsseldorf, Germany, when the drama unfolded. On the ground, witnesses described hearing loud bangs that “sounded like explosions” before seeing the aircraft’s turbine catch fire.

“We heard repeated explosions and saw the turbine catch fire. It was very scary. We were on the balcony and saw it all,” one eyewitness recalled in a video shared to TikTok. The footage shows streaks of fire trailing behind the jet as it clawed into the sky.

Inside the cabin, passengers braced for the worst. Several began frantically texting loved ones. “People were crying, screaming, saying goodbye to their families. Everyone thought the plane was going down,” one shaken traveler told German media.

Condor Airlines attempted to downplay the emergency, saying in a statement that the blaze was not technically a fire but “a reaction near the engine that normally takes place in the combustion chamber, leading to a visible reaction.”

Aviation experts, however, say such “visible reactions” are anything but routine for passengers who suddenly see flames licking the fuselage of their aircraft. “To the average flyer, fire equals catastrophe,” one retired pilot explained.

Initially, the captain considered turning back to Corfu. But air traffic control advised against it, directing the crew instead to make a tense journey across the Ionian Sea and land in Brindisi, Italy, on a single functioning engine.

The plane, carrying 273 passengers and eight crew members, landed safely after what many described as the longest and most terrifying hour of their lives. With hotels in the region packed, dozens of shaken travelers spent the night on the airport floor before being flown to Germany the next day.

The incident adds to a string of mid-air scares that have shaken passenger confidence this year. Boeing jets in particular have faced mounting scrutiny, with aviation watchdogs warning of a need for stricter inspections and transparency.

As one exhausted passenger summed it up: “I’ll never forget the sight of fire outside my window. I thought that was it for us.”
