Vladimir Putin has gone on the offensive — this time targeting Britain — just days before his highly anticipated peace summit with President Donald Trump in Alaska.
The Kremlin claims London is actively trying to sabotage Trump’s effort to broker an end to the war in Ukraine, warning that the U.K.’s interference could derail what might be the most high-stakes diplomatic meeting in decades.
Britain’s Warning Triggers Kremlin Fury
Tensions flared after new U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer declared that Putin “cannot be trusted as far as you could throw him” and vowed to back Ukraine until there is a “just” peace.
Moscow fired back, accusing Britain of undermining negotiations.
“We note the incessant attempts by London and some of its partners to disrupt a peaceful resolution of the conflict by addressing its root causes,” Russia’s embassy in London said in a blistering statement.
They claimed that Britain’s actions — along with other European allies — prove “the opportunistic approach of European capitals, which are counting on continuing to use Ukraine as an anti-Russian battering ram.”
Trump-Putin Meeting Faces Global Pressure
Trump and Putin are set to meet Friday, August 15, in Alaska, where a ceasefire in Ukraine will top the agenda.
The location is no accident — the U.S. isn’t a member of the International Criminal Court, which means Putin’s ICC arrest warrant for the invasion of Ukraine is essentially useless there.
“A warrant from the ICC means nothing in countries that are not signatories,” explained security expert Hamish de Bretton-Gordon. “That is the loophole.”
Putin’s aides say they hope the next round of talks will be on Russian soil, adding that “an invitation to that effect has already been made to the President of the United States.”
Zelensky Warns It’s a Trap
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has blasted the talks, insisting Putin’s goal is to stall, not stop, the war.
“The Russians simply want to buy time, not end the war,” Zelensky said. “His forces are redeploying in ways that suggest preparations for new offensive operations. If someone is preparing for peace, this is not what he does.”
Behind the Scenes: Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher
Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s investment envoy, warned on Telegram that “a number of countries interested in continuing the conflict will make titanic efforts” to stop the summit.
The Alaska meeting comes as fears grow that Ukraine’s future could be decided without NATO input — a prospect alarming European allies but embraced by Moscow.
“This is Putin’s chance to frame the endgame on his terms,” one Western intelligence source told us. “If Trump comes out of this looking like the peacemaker, it will shift global power dynamics overnight.”
For now, both leaders are preparing for a rare face-to-face moment — one that could either pave the way for peace or plunge the world further toward the brink.
