Times Square — the neon heart of New York City — turned into a crime scene just after 1 a.m. Saturday when bullets tore through one of the most crowded tourist zones in America.
Police say the chaos started with a heated argument between two people near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue. Moments later, shots rang out, sending visitors and locals scrambling for safety.
Three people were injured:
- A 19-year-old man shot in the foot
- A 65-year-old man hit in the leg
- An 18-year-old woman grazed in the neck
All were rushed to Bellevue Hospital. Police say they are expected to survive.
NYPD officers swarmed the scene within minutes. By 1:30 a.m., they had a 17-year-old suspect in custody just blocks from the shooting. A firearm was recovered.
“This could have been much worse,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell in a statement to reporters. “Times Square is packed even in the early hours. We’re thankful no one was killed.”
Videos posted on X (formerly Twitter) show tourists bolting from the Hard Rock Cafe as shots echoed between skyscrapers. One clip shows a man lying on the sidewalk as paramedics treat him. Another shows shattered glass and what witnesses say were bullet holes in a car window.
“I’ve been coming to New York for years,” said Maria Lopez, a visitor from Texas who was nearby when the shooting started. “I’ve never been that scared in my life. We just ran.”
Times Square has seen several high-profile shootings in recent years despite heavy police presence. In May 2021, a toddler was among three people shot during a dispute. The city boosted patrols afterward, but incidents have persisted.
Former NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea once called Times Square “the most protected block in America” — a statement Saturday’s gunfire now puts into question.
Police are still piecing together what led to the dispute. The 17-year-old suspect’s name has not been released due to his age. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and tourist cameras.
“This is supposed to be the safest place in the city,” said one street performer who works near the Red Steps. “When shots go off here, it makes you wonder if anywhere is safe.”
