Stevie Nicks has never been one to hold back—and now, at 77, the Fleetwood Mac legend is opening up about the personal stories and secret struggles that helped shape her iconic life.
From her lifelong obsession with Barbie dolls to the emotional reasons behind her decision not to have children, Nicks recently reflected on her journey in a revealing interview from her Los Angeles home. “My mom gave me my first Barbie, and I just remember thinking, ‘God, I’ll never be her,’” Nicks shared, laughing. “She was tall, perfect, in heels. Everything I wasn’t.”
That childhood moment planted a seed that would grow into global stardom—and, eventually, full-circle recognition. In 2023, Mattel released a Stevie Nicks Barbie, decked out in her signature black chiffon and feathered hair. “I take pictures of her. I talk to her. I think she’s real!” Nicks admitted. “People are like, ‘Stevie, we’re getting a little worried about you.’”
Born in Arizona in 1948, Nicks moved often due to her father’s corporate career. But her love for music took root early, thanks to her grandfather, AJ Nicks, who introduced her to legends like Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. “He liked my voice, and he was kind of a badass. I thought, I can do this.”
And she did—on her own terms. In college, Nicks would strut through campus in wild outfits and funky heels, embracing the curiosity and stares. “I loved that feeling… you don’t know who I am now, but you’ll know soon.”
She joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 alongside Lindsey Buckingham, and with Christine McVie joining them, the chemistry was instant—and electric. “She had a way of connecting with people in this very passionate, real way,” said longtime friend and collaborator Mike Campbell. “She’s really unlike any other rock star I can think of.”
Mick Fleetwood once compared her to Edith Piaf: raw, emotional, beloved. Bandmate Benmont Tench noted how female artists constantly cite her as a creative influence. But behind the fame and fire was also great personal pain.
When her best friend Robin passed away from leukemia shortly after giving birth, Nicks shocked many by marrying Robin’s widower, Kim Anderson. The grief-fueled marriage was short-lived. “In a way, I’m surprised I didn’t have a baby,” Nicks confessed. “But I chose my career, and my music, and what I do.”
Like many creatives, the pandemic brought her momentum to a halt. “When Covid happened, I gave in very quickly. I didn’t write anything for the first couple years. I just watched a lot of miniseries.”
In 2022, tragedy struck again with the passing of Christine McVie. “I was going to rent a plane to go see her, but her family said, ‘Don’t come, she may not be here tomorrow.’ And the next day, she was gone. I didn’t get to say goodbye.”
That loss was the final nail in the coffin for Fleetwood Mac’s future. “There’s no chance of putting it back together. Without her, it just couldn’t work.”
Still, Stevie Nicks has no plans to step away from the stage. “To get up and dance and put on outfits and sing and tell stories—that’s what I’ve done since I was a kid. I don’t intend to stop.”
