Future lawyers sitting for the New York State Bar Exam were left stunned Wednesday when a Fordham Law graduate went into cardiac arrest mid-test—and proctors allegedly told everyone else to keep going.
The terrifying moment unfolded at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Long Island, where dozens of students were taking the second day of the high-stakes exam. Just before the scheduled lunch break, the young woman collapsed from her chair, triggering a frantic response from school safety officers who began CPR while waiting for paramedics.
Despite the medical emergency, proctors did not stop the exam, according to multiple test-takers who spoke to Newsday and ABC 7.
“That’s a real person who could be dying right in front of us,” one shocked student said. “And we’re still being expected to finish our questions?”
Paramedics eventually transported the woman to a nearby hospital, but her condition has not been released.
When students returned from lunch, it was as if nothing had happened. No official updates. No acknowledgment.
“From a purely human standpoint, that’s another human being in distress,” said the same Fordham student. “And that’s not something you can just flip to the back of your mind.”
While the New York State Board of Law Examiners defended the handling of the situation—claiming the incident happened “only a few minutes before the scheduled end of the exam session”—some students say the staff’s response was cold and dismissive.
One test-taker named Isaac told ABC 7 that when nearby students pleaded for help, a proctor allegedly snapped, “Shut up, and continue with the exam.”
Others said they moved away in tears to make space for first responders.
Hofstra Law’s own bar prep director, Nicole Lefton, acknowledged the trauma in a message to students.
“We understand that witnessing a medical incident during the Bar Exam today may have been distressing,” she wrote. “While we cannot share any medical details, we want to acknowledge the impact it may have had on you.”
Passing the New York bar is a non-negotiable step for practicing law—but for students at Hofstra this year, the hardest part of the exam wasn’t a tricky essay question. It was watching someone fight for their life while being told to keep writing.
