A shocking and tragic incident rocked Royal Caribbean’s “Icon of the Seas” this week when a crew member reportedly stabbed a fellow employee before jumping into the ocean.
The drama unfolded Thursday night off the coast of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. According to authorities, a 35-year-old South African man allegedly stabbed his 28-year-old female colleague—also from South Africa—multiple times during what the cruise line later described as a “personal dispute.”
Around 7 p.m., passengers heard the dreaded “Oscar” code blare over the ship’s intercom, signaling that someone had fallen—or in this case, jumped—overboard. The nearly 250,000-ton ship, the largest cruise vessel in the world, immediately slowed down, turned around, and launched rescue boats.
The man was recovered from the water unresponsive and later pronounced dead by the ship’s medical team.
The woman he reportedly attacked was rushed to the ship’s medical center and is now in stable condition. A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean confirmed the incident and said the cruise line is cooperating with authorities.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, early indications suggest the man took his own life after the stabbing.
The “Icon of the Seas” was in the middle of a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise and is expected to return to its home port in Miami on Saturday. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the man’s exact cause of death, and the assault remains under active investigation.
Passengers and crew alike have been left stunned by the sudden violence on what was supposed to be a dream voyage aboard the record-breaking cruise liner.
