A beloved voice of the 1980s R&B scene is now behind bars—and her future in the United States is hanging by a thread.

Jane Eugene, the soulful powerhouse behind Loose Ends’ chart-topping hits “Hangin’ on a String” and “Slow Down,” has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for more than three months, sparking outrage among fans and fellow musicians. The British-born singer, known for her velvet vocals and trailblazing contributions to the genre, was stopped while crossing the Canadian border and has been shuffled through the U.S. immigration system ever since.

According to her representatives, Eugene was first held in a New York facility before being transferred to a remote ICE detention center in Kentucky—far from the spotlight she once commanded. The reason? She overstayed her visa, a technical violation that now threatens to erase decades of her life in the U.S. If deported, she could be banned from returning for a staggering ten years.

“This is a nightmare,” said one close friend, speaking anonymously out of fear of legal retaliation. “Jane has lived in America for decades. She pays taxes, she contributes to the culture, and now she’s being treated like a criminal.”

The singer’s situation has grown increasingly dire. A GoFundMe page set up to raise $50,000 for legal representation and basic necessities paints a grim picture: “As you might imagine, the conditions are taking a huge toll. Jane’s health is rapidly deteriorating. She needs urgent help.”

So far, more than 270 supporters have chipped in, raising over $15,000—but organizers say time is running out. ICE proceedings move quickly, and without a strong legal defense, the singer could be deported before fans even realize what’s happening.

“She loves this country,” the fundraiser reads. “She has made her home here and wants to fight using every legal remedy available.”

For longtime fans, the news is devastating. Jane Eugene wasn’t just another pop star—she was a groundbreaking force in Black British music, breaking into the American market and topping the Billboard charts at a time when international success for U.K. soul artists was virtually unheard of. Her voice helped define a genre, and her influence can still be heard in today’s R&B landscape.

“She brought something unique, something special to American music,” one fan commented online. “Now she’s being thrown away like she doesn’t matter.”

With her health faltering and the clock ticking, Eugene’s supporters are urging the public to rally behind her. They’re calling on the music industry, immigration advocates, and even politicians to step in before it’s too late.

“This shouldn’t be happening to someone who has given so much,” said a music industry insider. “She’s not a threat—she’s a legend.”

As Jane Eugene sits in a detention center, the fight to keep her in the country she’s called home continues. Whether America still has a place for her is now in the hands of ICE—and the public.

3 thoughts on “ICE Detains British Singer for Overstaying Visa”
  1. I don’t understand why she didn’t follow the rules? Did she think the laws don’t apply to her? I feel for her but like they have drilled into our heads for the last 10 years, NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.

  2. SHE made the decision to break USA law. There are reasonable and well-published consequences for breaking USA laws—especially if you have graciously been granted temporary entry into our country. Entry is a ‘privilege’, NOT a ‘right’. Does she think our laws don’t apply to her? If so, tell us why she’s ‘special’. I wanna hear her excuse.

  3. Seems to be a lot of people who have come to our country and overstayed their visa for many years. Why has their not been any democrat asking these questions? It’s called a voter. Democrats have done this especially Obama. Obama, “We need votes so let them come we can take care of them with Americans benefits no problem.” “Americans are to stupid to know we are sucking them dry and making them obsolete also.” No Obama we are not stupid we understand how you work and your weaponized government. You underestimated Americans and their love of our country. We expect everyone who lives here to law obeying citizens and guests. But you and your slaves thought you where above the law. I guarantee we the people will not allow you to get off Scott free on what you have done to us and our country. You can run but you can’t hide. You might say your visa has expired also. Accountability and justice for we the people. Underestimating Americans was your biggest mistake. Second mistake was trying to get rid of white people. I will never consider you or any other democrat an American citizen. Biggest corruption scandal of lifetime is how history will be written about democrats and rino’s not to mention illegal politicians. Everyone of you should face treason charges in the least. Trust me no favorable judge’s and jurors for you all. I want to be front and center for it all and demand it be televised. El Salvador is too good for you also. Illegals need to know we have laws and we are expected to obey them then you better as well. Our government has to be held accountable at higher standards also. Start right now. You take an oath and break that oath for personal gain then accountability is judged by we the people. We have made it loud and clear, accountability is what we want and expect it. We can’t be bought democrats and rino’s. I want justice and accountability like millions of others. Justice system don’t let us down!
