Katy Perry’s San Francisco concert took a frightening turn Friday night when a jaw-dropping stage stunt went horribly wrong.
The pop superstar was soaring over the crowd on a massive butterfly-shaped prop when, mid-performance, the contraption suddenly jolted and malfunctioned. Fan footage shows Perry clinging to the rig as it jerked unexpectedly, leaving her suspended high above the audience. She immediately stopped singing and looked up, visibly shaken, as the machinery continued to sway.
Perry let out a yelp as the butterfly dipped, prompting gasps from the audience. Though clearly startled, the singer quickly regained her composure and continued the show like a seasoned pro.

“She’s an astronaut—she can handle a little turbulence,” one fan joked online, referencing Perry’s recent flight with Blue Origin’s all-female crew. Another viewer commented, “She handled it like a pro, barely skipped a beat, but it should’ve never happened.”
Not everyone was impressed. “Having things like this fly over the crowd is a huge safety hazard for the artist AND the fans,” one concerned commenter wrote.
The incident adds to a string of bizarre moments during Perry’s ongoing Lifetimes tour. Just last month, her Sydney show was interrupted when an overzealous fan stormed the stage during her performance of Hot N Cold. The man grabbed her shoulder, startling her mid-song, before he was chased off by security.
Authorities later confirmed that the man was arrested and charged with two offenses. He was granted conditional bail and banned from Sydney Olympic Park for six months.
As for Perry, the star continues to power through every chaotic moment, proving once again that the show must go on—no matter how high the stakes, or how high she’s dangling.

Looked like it was part of the act… to shock the audience… she wasn’t “left clinging”, she was always sitting… feet still in stirrups… never even dropped her microphone… she was also wearing a safety strap/belt so couldn’t fall…
