What was supposed to be a joyful celebration turned into a scene of terror Saturday night when gunfire rang out at a class reunion in Chattanooga, Tennessee—sending four people to the hospital and leaving families shaken.
The shooting took place at the Tyner Community Center around 10 p.m., during what witnesses say was a well-attended gathering of former classmates and their families.
“It was like a warzone,” said Jeoff Herman, who was at the event. “One second we’re laughing, the next, everyone’s diving to the ground. There were babies crying and people bleeding. It was bad—real bad.”
According to Chattanooga police, four individuals were wounded in the gunfire. Thankfully, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The victims, who have not yet been publicly identified, were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public, though they have remained tight-lipped about whether a suspect has been identified or arrested. However, one person was reportedly seen being placed in the back of a police cruiser at the scene.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as shots rang out in the crowded community center.
“I saw a girl on the ground—she’d been shot,” said witness Dominic Burkes. “We covered her wounds and tried to keep her calm. I held her hand and kept the sun off her face until help got there. I was just trying to keep her alive.”
So far, officials have not released details on what led to the gunfire. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
The shooting follows a troubling pattern of violence at public gatherings across the country in recent months—highlighting ongoing concerns about safety at community events.
Chattanooga police say updates will be provided as more details become available.
