Houston, TX — A 22-year-old aspiring TikTok influencer is behind bars after allegedly gunning down a decorated U.S. Marine veteran in front of his fiancée and baby—then shamelessly posting about the killing online.
Justin Guzman, whose TikTok page is packed with cringeworthy lip-syncs and gun-themed skits, turned himself in to Houston police this week after nearly a month of public outrage. He’s charged in the June 3 killing of 30-year-old Anthony Sanders, a Marine Corps vet who’d just returned to civilian life to raise his young family.
The deadly encounter happened in broad daylight at Houston’s upscale Galleria Mall.
A Confrontation Turns Fatal
According to authorities, the violence began after Guzman and his friend Marko Cinan, 23, allegedly harassed Sanders’ fiancée inside an elevator. Sanders, described by family as respectful but fiercely protective, confronted the men in the Orange Garage parking structure shortly afterward.
When Sanders attempted to drive away with his fiancée and their 10-month-old son, Guzman allegedly cut him off by “brake-checking” him—slamming on his brakes to force a stop. Sanders stepped out of his vehicle. Seconds later, police say, Guzman opened fire.
Sanders was shot ten times while his partner and infant watched helplessly from inside the car.
“He could have killed all three of them,” said Royal Sanders, the victim’s mother and an Army veteran. “Thank God my son stepped out first. That’s the kind of man he was—he faced danger to protect his family.”
TikTok Clout Over Human Life?
Adding to the family’s anguish, Guzman later posted a video on TikTok of himself dancing in front of a television newscast about the shooting.
“This wasn’t just murder—it was mockery,” said Frank Sanders, the victim’s father and also an Army veteran. “You shoot my son and then go online and treat it like a joke? We’re not letting this go.”
During a hearing Monday, the Sanders family submitted the disturbing video as evidence.
The Guzman account, now inactive, had over 50,000 followers. Many of his videos featured him and Cinan jokingly pointing finger guns at the camera and pretending to fire.
A Knife That Never Existed
Guzman’s attorneys claim he acted in self-defense, alleging Sanders had brandished a knife during the confrontation. But police say no weapon was found on or near Sanders’ body—and eyewitness testimony reportedly contradicts Guzman’s version of events.
Both Guzman and Cinan fled the scene but were briefly detained by Houston police and released pending investigation. Public pressure mounted after surveillance footage and witness statements surfaced.
Cinan eventually turned himself in on June 25. His bond has been set at $1 million. Guzman is being held on $750,000 bond. Cinan, who has a criminal record, is also facing additional charges.
Who Was Anthony Sanders?
Anthony Sanders served two tours in the Middle East and was recently honorably discharged. He had plans to start a trucking business and marry his fiancée, who witnessed his death with their infant son in her arms.
“He didn’t survive war zones to be murdered in a mall parking garage,” Royal Sanders said, holding back tears. “He deserved better.”
The case has sparked national debate over violence inspired—or glorified—by social media clout chasing. Critics argue platforms like TikTok fail to crack down on dangerous content until it’s far too late.
Next Steps
The Sanders family is pushing for the maximum charges and a federal investigation.
“This wasn’t just street violence,” Frank Sanders said. “This was calculated, filmed, posted, and monetized. This is what social media fame looks like in hell.”
Both Guzman and Cinan are expected back in court later this summer. Prosecutors say more charges could be coming.
