Tensions reportedly ran high behind closed doors at Kensington Palace after Kate Middleton abruptly pulled out of a major public appearance at Royal Ascot on Wednesday—just over an hour before she was set to ride alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla in the royal carriage procession.

The sudden announcement left staff “bewildered and worried,” according to a palace insider who spoke with The Daily Beast. “Everyone was wandering around going, ‘What is going on?’” said a former courtier still connected with royal staff. “This is one of the biggest days in the royal calendar. You don’t just miss Ascot on a whim.”

Palace aides had even published the official “carriage list” just before noon, which still included Kate. Her sudden absence left insiders scrambling and sparked fresh concerns over the Princess of Wales’ health, particularly given her ongoing cancer recovery.

A royal source told reporters that Kate had simply been exhausted after attending two major events in quick succession: Trooping the Colour on Saturday and the Order of the Garter ceremony on Monday. “There are good days and bad days,” a friend of the princess said. “She couldn’t face it.”

Though the palace tried to downplay the cancellation as part of Kate’s effort to “find balance” during her recovery, the last-minute nature of the announcement didn’t go unnoticed. Some staff reportedly feared she had fallen seriously ill or been taken to the hospital.

The palace has remained silent on the record, but background briefings to media outlets insisted there was no cause for alarm. Still, Prince William’s somber expression upon arriving alone at Ascot did little to quiet the growing speculation. Observers noted that although he appeared more cheerful later, the optics of his solo attendance stirred further questions.

Adding to the concern was a rare admission in a report from The Daily Telegraph, hinting that Kate’s seemingly healthy appearance in recent weeks may have masked the ongoing difficulty of her recovery. “Her appearance, recently so healthy, has belied how difficult things were last year, and how hard the fight to return to normality has been,” the paper reported.

Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis in a video message earlier this year, sharing that she had completed preventative chemotherapy and was now in remission. “There are good days and bad days,” she said at the time. “I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty.”

The palace’s handling of Kate’s health has faced intense scrutiny since early 2024, when a botched attempt at a media blackout created a global frenzy of speculation. This time, aides seem determined to avoid total silence—but the last-minute scramble and whispered rumors suggest the royal household may still be struggling to manage the fallout.
