Top Trump-era officials to testify as GOP probes alleged cover-up of former president’s health crisis

Washington, D.C. — In what’s shaping up to be one of the most politically charged hearings of the year, Senate Republicans are preparing to grill former insiders on who was truly in charge during Joe Biden’s presidency as evidence mounts that the 46th president may not have been mentally fit to lead.

On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee will hold a blockbuster hearing focused on what Republicans are calling a “coordinated cover-up” of Biden’s cognitive decline — and they’ve secured a powerful slate of witnesses to pull back the curtain on the inner workings of the White House.

“This is about truth, accountability, and the Constitution,” declared Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. “The American people deserve to know: Who was actually making the decisions when President Biden clearly wasn’t capable of doing the job?”

Cornyn, along with Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., is leading the charge in the Senate, as House Republicans simultaneously ramp up their own probe into what they describe as one of the most egregious political deceptions in modern history.

Trump-Era Officials Ready to Testify

The witness list reads like a roll call of seasoned Washington insiders, all with deep experience in governance — and strong ties to the Trump administration:

  • Sean Spicer, former White House press secretary, who once stood at the center of presidential communications.
  • Theodore Wold, Trump’s former deputy assistant for domestic policy and acting assistant attorney general.
  • John Harrison, a respected legal scholar from the University of Virginia and former DOJ official under both Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

The hearing will examine how key White House aides, media figures, and possibly even cabinet members allegedly shielded Biden from public scrutiny while quietly taking over major responsibilities behind closed doors.

“This is a threat to our republic,” said Sen. Schmitt. “If an unfit president can be propped up by unelected staffers and a complicit press, then we’ve shattered the transparency Americans expect from their leaders.”

Biden’s Health Crisis: What Did They Know — and When?

The hearing comes after mounting reports that Biden, now 82, displayed troubling cognitive lapses during his final year in office — including repeated gaffes, forgotten names, and a growing reliance on teleprompters and handlers.

Former staffers have reportedly described chaotic scenes behind the scenes, with senior aides making decisions in his place and limiting access to the president.

Even former press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has gone silent after once fiercely defending Biden’s stamina and mental sharpness. She declined to comment when asked if she would testify.

Growing Momentum in the House

Across the Capitol, House Republicans are already pursuing a parallel investigation. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., has introduced legislation to create a Select Committee tasked with uncovering how deep the alleged cover-up went.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., has demanded sworn interviews with ten former Biden staffers. So far, only four have agreed to testify, including:

  • Neera Tanden, senior advisor to First Lady Jill Biden
  • Anthony Bernal, longtime Biden confidant
  • Ashley Williams, former Deputy Director of Oval Office Operations
  • Annie Tomasini, Deputy Chief of Staff

Comer has hinted that subpoenas may follow if additional witnesses refuse to come forward voluntarily.

What’s at Stake?

At the heart of the hearings is a central constitutional question: If the president is no longer capable of fulfilling his duties, who has the legal and moral authority to step in? And if that process was ignored or manipulated — was it treasonous?

“We need to know if the 25th Amendment should have been triggered,” said one senior GOP staffer. “This goes beyond politics. If there was a shadow presidency happening inside the West Wing, that’s a scandal of historic proportions.”

Wednesday’s hearing is expected to draw national attention — and could be just the beginning. Republican lawmakers say more subpoenas, testimony, and even criminal referrals may be coming depending on what the witnesses reveal.

As Senator Cornyn put it bluntly: “This isn’t about hurting Joe Biden. This is about making sure this never happens again.”
