Former ESPN anchor Sam Ponder, a familiar face to football fans across the country, is finally speaking out—and she’s not holding back. After nearly a year of silence following her high-profile exit from the sports network, Ponder resurfaced with a bold message on Instagram that’s already sparking national conversation.
Ponder, who was dropped by ESPN in the summer of 2024 just weeks before the NFL season, now says she believes her termination wasn’t just about the budget.
“I Don’t Buy It Was Just Cuts”
At the time of her dismissal, Ponder was co-hosting Sunday NFL Countdown, which had just wrapped one of its highest-rated seasons in recent years. The timing raised eyebrows.
Michele Tafoya, longtime NFL sideline reporter and friend of Ponder’s, called it suspicious.
“I don’t believe that anything is just budget cuts anymore,” Tafoya said during a podcast appearance. “They wanted her gone. That’s obvious. And the fact they did it just before kickoff? That sends a message.”
Ponder, 38, hasn’t publicly slammed ESPN for the decision. But in conservative circles, many see her departure as part of a broader trend—voices with traditional values being quietly pushed out of major platforms.
Faith, Family, and Gender Politics
A graduate of Liberty University, Ponder has long been open about her Christian faith, her conservative worldview, and her dedication to family. She lives in New York with her husband, former NFL quarterback Christian Ponder, and their three children.
This weekend, she made waves by wading into the heated debate over transgender athletes—particularly transgender-identifying youth in sports.
When asked by a follower how she would handle the issue if one of her children identified as trans and wanted to compete in sports, Ponder answered with conviction.
“I would lovingly and patiently help them understand that no child is born in the wrong body,” she wrote. “Preferences for clothing or activities don’t define your sex. And no one can know what it feels like to be the opposite sex—just like they can’t know what it feels like to be another race.”
Her words continued:
“They are unique. I was one of those kids. They are loved exactly how they were made. Created on purpose—not by mistake.”
Backlash and Applause
Predictably, Ponder’s message drew fierce reactions. Progressives on social media accused her of spreading misinformation, while conservative leaders and parents praised her for saying what many feel too intimidated to say publicly.
“This is exactly the kind of courage we need from public figures,” tweeted Allie Beth Stuckey, a Christian commentator and podcast host. “Sam Ponder is a hero to so many families who feel voiceless.”
Others noted that Ponder’s stance echoes what many women’s sports advocates have argued for years—that allowing biological males to compete against females threatens fairness, safety, and integrity in women’s athletics.
What’s Next for Ponder?
Since her departure from ESPN, Ponder has kept a relatively low profile. But with this latest post, she may be signaling a return—not just to media, but to the national spotlight.
Insiders say she’s been approached by several conservative-leaning media outlets, including The Daily Wire and OutKick, both of which have made strong pushes into sports and culture commentary in recent years.
If her Instagram comeback is any indication, Sam Ponder isn’t done yet. And in a media environment where lines are drawn and sides are chosen, she seems ready to make her position crystal clear.
“Truth is not hate,” she added in a follow-up post. “It’s love, even when it’s hard to hear.”

I think she is 100% correct. Besides, she has the right to express her views, just as much as those who oppose her. I also have that right to speak what I feel.
It’s not “shocking” when someone simply tells the truth…. well, OK, it might be coming from ESPN…
Too smart for ESPN.
