While First Lady Melania Trump continues to prioritize privacy and family in President Trump’s second term, Second Lady Usha Vance is honoring the tradition Melania helped build—by launching a White House-backed reading challenge aimed at getting American kids off screens and into books.

Vance, wife of Vice President J.D. Vance, made a thoughtful appearance Thursday morning on Fox & Friends to unveil the “12 Books for Freedom” summer program, an initiative designed to boost childhood literacy and inspire a love of learning.

“This is a chance to put away the phones and rediscover real stories,” Vance said. “Books can build character and connection. That’s what we want for every child in this country.”

Children who complete the 12-book challenge will be entered into a contest to win a special visit to the White House—continuing a beloved tradition of family-focused programs rooted in American values.

Carrying the Torch Gracefully

Melania Trump, who redefined the role of First Lady with elegance and restraint during her first term, is now embracing a more private role in her husband’s second presidency. But that doesn’t mean the causes she championed are being ignored.

“Melania set the tone early on with her Be Best initiative, reminding America that children’s wellbeing, character, and dignity come first,” said one senior aide. “She laid the foundation—and Usha is helping carry it forward.”

Melania made a brief but warm appearance at this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll, reading to children on the South Lawn. And while her public events have been rare, her influence continues to shape the tone of the East Wing—graceful, focused, and deeply protective of children.

Insiders close to the First Family say Melania has been spending time between Washington and Florida, choosing to stay largely out of the spotlight while Barron Trump begins his first year at college.

“Melania is devoted to her family, especially Barron,” said one family friend. “She’s not withdrawn—she’s just doing things her own way, as she always has.”

Usha’s Steady Hand

As Melania steps back, Usha Vance brings a calm, intellectual energy to the national stage. A Yale Law graduate and devoted mother of three, Vance is a quiet force with a passion for education.

During her Fox & Friends appearance, she spoke about how reading plays a key role in her own home. “My oldest is devouring the Odyssey and Iliad,” she shared. “Stories that teach courage, resilience, and wisdom—they matter more than ever.”

Though she admitted to a few nerves on air, Vance’s message was clear: screen time is replacing story time in too many homes—and that’s a problem. “We want to give parents a reason to say yes to books again,” she said.

Not a Replacement—A Compliment

Far from filling a void, Usha Vance’s work is seen by many as a natural continuation of the dignified approach Melania brought to her role.

“She’s not trying to overshadow Melania,” said a former Trump advisor. “She respects the First Lady and understands the example she set. This is about building on it, not replacing it.”

With the First Lady staying true to her values and the Second Lady stepping in with substance and humility, the Trump White House is showing a united front—focused on children, tradition, and American values that transcend politics.

As for Melania, supporters say they admire her now more than ever.

“She never needed to prove anything,” said one fan on social media. “She’s already the most elegant First Lady of our time.”
