Meghan Markle is once again the punchline of the internet after posting what was supposed to be a charming “morning garden haul” — but skeptics say the only soil involved came from Whole Foods.
The 43-year-old Duchess of Sussex tried to sell a cozy, down-to-earth image this week by uploading a photo of her rescue beagle Mia sniffing a wicker basket of perfectly polished produce. The image, shared to the Instagram account of her fledgling lifestyle brand As Ever, featured leeks, corn, red peppers, carrots, squash, and broccoli — all squeaky clean, artfully arranged, and suspiciously flawless.
But eagle-eyed viewers weren’t buying it.
“Those vegetables haven’t seen a single speck of dirt,” one Reddit user wrote. “She either has a magic garden or a Platinum Whole Foods membership.”
The Garden Lie?
Corn in May? Bell peppers with zero blemishes? Trimmed and manicured leeks? Social media exploded with skepticism, as critics questioned whether any of the vegetables were even in season in Markle’s region of coastal California.
“Corn doesn’t ripen until late June or July,” one commenter posted. “Unless she’s growing it under Buckingham Palace lighting, there’s no way.”
Another jabbed, “She’s harvesting like it’s an episode of The Crown meets Chopped — it’s all staged.”
The duchess, who has her Instagram comments disabled, didn’t respond — but the backlash spilled onto other platforms.
Harvest Couture?
Beyond the produce itself, critics zeroed in on Markle’s garden attire: spotless white pants, fresh pink pedicure, and $1,000 Loro Piana flats.
“She’s harvesting in thousand-dollar shoes while the rest of us are ankle-deep in compost,” one Instagram user wrote. “Is she gardening or auditioning for a Goop cover?”
Brand Built on a Fantasy
The image was part of the ongoing rollout for As Ever, Markle’s latest attempt to dominate the lifestyle space after the lukewarm reception to her podcast and Netflix projects.
Launched earlier this year after she quietly shelved “American Riviera Orchard,” the brand initially offered limited-edition raspberry jam, honey, teas, and dried flowers — all supposedly made from her personal garden. The launch sold out within an hour, but Markle recently told Fast Company she’s hitting pause.
“I want to see what the brand is telling me,” she said in the May 27 interview, adding, “Everything starts from love, from home, from the garden.”
But with produce like that, critics say the brand is telling us one thing loud and clear: it’s fiction wrapped in a filter.
A Lavish Life Behind the Facade
Markle and Prince Harry live in a $14.7 million Montecito mansion surrounded by acres of land, security gates, and designer decor — not exactly the humble cottagecore aesthetic she seems desperate to sell.
The couple, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and have since inked multimillion-dollar deals with Netflix and Spotify (the latter of which ended awkwardly), now appear to be pivoting once again — this time to soft-focus domesticity and luxury branding.
But critics say Markle’s real problem isn’t her ambition — it’s her authenticity.
“She wants the world to see her as a grounded, relatable mom planting carrots and bottling jam,” one royal watcher tweeted. “But everything about it feels choreographed, down to the dirt-free onions.”
What’s Next for Meghan?
In the same interview, Markle teased the possibility of launching a clothing line, calling fashion “an interesting space for me.” With As Ever products on hold until at least 2026, the duchess appears to be testing the waters once more — though at this point, even her fans might be wondering how real any of it really is.
One X (formerly Twitter) user put it bluntly: “She’s not building a brand. She’s building a character.”

Don’t call her “Duchess”! She doesn’t deserve it! Secondly, why doesn’t she just bow out gracefully, while she can?!
She doesn’t deserve a royal title but she does deserve to make a living on top of what she already has. I bought Cali. corn yesterday, so who really cares about the harvest. Let her go on as she does and let the woman fall where she may. Meanwhile there is a lot worse going on with celebs, finally do we really care what she does? I say leave her alone and let her live her life.
Come on, can’t we give this poor girl a little slack? I’m fairly sure her childhood didn’t include planting a garden in her back yard. She;s transitioning from one lifestyle where she;s always in the spotlight to an even bigger one where she;s on the world stage. She’s trying to find where she fits in this whole new lifestyle. Have a little compassion, please
Just leave her alone. Why are people so cruel, no matter what she trys to do. Who cares. So much meaness in this country. Get a life. Maybe she cleaned her fu king vegetables and who cares about her toenail polish? Geez Louise
