“Edan is coming home,” President says, hailing a breakthrough in Middle East talks under his leadership

In a dramatic announcement Sunday night, President Donald J. Trump confirmed that Edan Alexander — the last living American held by Hamas — is on track to be freed after nearly two years in captivity. The news signals a major diplomatic victory for the Trump administration and a potential turning point in efforts to end the brutal Israel-Hamas war.

“Edan Alexander is coming home,” Trump declared in a Truth Social post. “An American citizen held hostage since October 2023 will soon be reunited with his family. This is a moment of faith, strength, and American resolve.”

The 21-year-old U.S.-Israeli dual citizen was kidnapped during the barbaric Hamas assault on October 7, 2023, while serving as a soldier in the Israeli Defense Forces’ elite Golani Brigade. He had voluntarily stayed on base that weekend — despite being off-duty — out of loyalty to his comrades. His decision may have cost him nearly two years in captivity.

Trump called the deal “a good faith step” by Hamas, citing behind-the-scenes pressure from the United States and the mediation of Egypt and Qatar. He emphasized that this progress is part of a broader plan to retrieve all American hostages and bring stability back to the region.

“This move brings us one step closer to ending this vicious conflict. I look forward to the day when every hostage is free and every American is safe.”

Republican Leaders Applaud the Breakthrough

Vice President JD Vance echoed Trump’s optimism but remained cautious. “Pray that Hamas follows through and Edan gets to come home,” Vance posted on X. He also praised businessman and Trump ally Steve Witkoff for playing a key role in the negotiations, writing: “Another triumph for a man attacked for doing the right thing—fighting to bring Americans home.”

A chorus of Republican lawmakers followed suit, with over 50 members of Congress signing a letter last week urging the administration to prioritize the rescue of the remaining five Americans captured by Hamas. Alexander is believed to be the only one still alive.

“Our government’s top duty is to protect American citizens,” the letter read. “Every moment these hostages remain in captivity is a moment too long.”

A Lone Soldier’s Courage and a Nation’s Promise

Born and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Edan moved to Israel at age 18 to serve in the IDF. He lived with his grandparents and joined a group known as “lone soldiers” — young men and women who volunteer without immediate family nearby. On the morning he was captured, his mother was visiting from the U.S., but Edan chose to stay with his unit. That decision, made out of duty, changed the course of his life.

Today, he is one of 59 hostages still in Gaza, with only 24 confirmed alive. Alexander has now spent two birthdays in captivity.

Varda Ben Baruch, Edan’s grandmother, has been a vocal advocate, often seen holding photos of her grandson at rallies near the Gaza border. She told Israeli media, “We won’t stop fighting for him. But today, there is hope again.”

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, a leading Israeli advocacy group, issued a powerful statement following the news: “President Trump, you’ve given the families hope. Please complete your mission. Bring them all home.”

Hamas Confirms Contact with U.S. Officials

In a rare public statement, Hamas confirmed they had been in communication with American officials “in recent days.” They stated that Alexander would be released as part of preliminary ceasefire talks — which include demands for humanitarian aid, opening border crossings, and allowing food and medicine into Gaza.

While no official release date has been confirmed, intelligence officials have described the negotiations as “the most serious in months.”

Media, Music, and Momentum

The nation’s support for the hostages has taken many forms. Grammy-nominated artist John Ondrasik, known as Five for Fighting, recently updated the lyrics to his hit song “Superman” to honor the hostages, including Alexander. The emotionally charged performance aired on Fox News @ Night, drawing attention to the ongoing plight.

“We need heroes. And these hostages — Edan among them — are living examples of courage under terror,” Ondrasik said.

Trump’s Strategy Pays Off

This high-stakes moment comes just after Trump marked his 100th day in his second term as president. The current commander-in-chief has leaned heavily on back-channel diplomacy and regional partnerships — particularly with Egypt and Qatar — to pressure Hamas and move toward a ceasefire.

Critics had questioned whether Trump could deliver real results. Tonight, his administration is proving them wrong.

“There is still much work to do,” Trump wrote. “But the world sees now that under American strength and leadership, progress is possible.”

A Nation Watches

As America waits for Edan Alexander to finally step back onto U.S. soil, the focus now shifts to ensuring the return of the remaining hostages — living and deceased.

For families who have spent months in agony, this could be the beginning of the end.

And for President Trump, it marks yet another milestone in reclaiming America’s global authority.
