A touching moment unfolded at St. Peter’s Basilica as a crying nun who shared a personal bond with Pope Francis was allowed to break strict protocol to mourn at his coffin.
Sister Genevieve Jeanningros, an 81-year-old French-Argentine nun, was captured on video approaching the late Pontiff’s coffin to pray. Normally, the area around the coffin is reserved exclusively for high-ranking members of the Church like cardinals, bishops, and priests. But in this case, an exception was made.
Sister Jeanningros had a close, longstanding friendship with Pope Francis, which moved Church officials to allow her into the restricted section.

In the emotional footage, the nun is seen visibly overcome with grief. She wipes her eyes with a tissue and brings her hands to her face as she weeps, standing just feet away from the late Pope’s coffin.
