An elderly grandmother from Washington endured an hours-long, horrific torture at the hands of her trusted handyman, authorities revealed Monday, shocking even veteran law enforcement officers.

Marcia Norman, 82, was discovered buried beneath a hastily constructed shed, following days of desperate searching by family and law enforcement. Authorities detailed a chilling scene, describing the grandmother as having been “tortured for hours” before her death—bound with Velcro straps and brutally attacked with a pneumatic nail gun.

Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock described the crime scene as the “worst case I’ve witnessed” in his extensive career.

“This wasn’t quick. Her injuries were deliberate and prolonged,” Warnock explained to NBC News, adding, “Some things, you just can’t unsee.”

Jeffrey Zizz, 47, the handyman with a troubling criminal history involving child molestation, appeared in court Monday charged with murder, kidnapping, and unlawful disposal of human remains. Authorities confirmed Zizz was the last person seen with Norman alive, having dinner with her on April 1.

Sheriff Derek Sanders disclosed disturbing evidence found at Zizz’s home, including a chilling five-page letter detailing plans to burglarize and sexually assault a female “customer.” The content closely matched the heinous circumstances of Norman’s death, though investigators found no direct evidence of sexual assault.

“It’s extremely disturbing,” Sanders told the media. “If I had to guess at this point, it’s because the suspect we have in custody is simply a violent person.”

Zizz was apprehended in Missoula, Montana, on April 7 and extradited back to Washington state after initially misleading investigators. He falsely claimed to have been home the night Norman disappeared—a lie that unraveled quickly under scrutiny.

Adding further outrage to the case, Zizz previously faced multiple charges for the rape and molestation of children, pleading guilty to three offenses in October 2022. Despite the severity of his crimes, he spent only 11 months in jail, released early on the condition of attending treatment.

Sheriff Sanders sharply criticized the judicial leniency that allowed Zizz back onto the streets.

“I don’t have anything nice to say,” Sanders remarked bitterly, suggesting this tragedy was preventable. “It’s like I’ve talked about this before. How many more tragedies before we rethink this?”

Zizz remains behind bars without bail, awaiting arraignment scheduled for May 6.

  1. He’s a good reason why we should restore the death penalty. No way should he continue to breathe. A trial and then electrocution.

  2. Death penalty is too easy for him. Make him suffer the same way that “poor” woman did, a heinous, terrible crime, brought tears to my eyes.
