What was supposed to be a peaceful vacation in one of India’s most scenic destinations turned into a bloodbath Tuesday, as suspected Islamic militants ambushed a group of unarmed tourists, gunning down at least 20 innocent people and wounding dozens more in cold blood.

According to senior Indian police officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the attackers struck suddenly in Pahalgam, a popular Himalayan resort town known for its pristine meadows and glacier views. Witnesses described a hail of bullets tearing through buses and groups of vacationers as panic erupted.

Authorities said the death toll could rise beyond 24, as many of the wounded remain in critical condition. This is the worst civilian attack in the Kashmir region in nearly a year.

“Two or three militants came out of nowhere and opened fire on everyone in sight,” one local official told The Indian Express. “They were targeting tourists, not military, not police—just families.”

Tourism Targeted in the Name of Jihad

The ambush marks a chilling escalation in anti-India militant activity. While violence in the Indian-controlled side of Kashmir had waned in recent years, Tuesday’s massacre is a grim reminder that Islamist terror remains a lurking threat.

Pahalgam, nestled in South Kashmir, had seen a major revival in tourism after years of unrest. But this brutal assault could once again derail the region’s economy—and cost more innocent lives.

“The terrorists are trying to send a message: peace is not allowed in Kashmir,” said Rajiv Verma, a security analyst based in New Delhi. “This wasn’t just an attack on tourists. It was an attack on India’s sovereignty and on civilization itself.”

Trump Issues Defiant Message

President Donald Trump wasted no time condemning the attack and standing with America’s strongest ally in the region.

“Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism. These savages must be dealt with ruthlessly. India has every right to defend itself.”

Trump’s words echoed the sentiments of millions of Americans and Indians who are tired of global leaders tiptoeing around radical Islamic terror.

Vice President Vance Visits India as Attack Unfolds

The massacre also coincided with a personal visit to India by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who was traveling with his wife Usha and their children. Vance met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi just days earlier.

Usha Vance, whose family hails from India, has spoken publicly about her deep Hindu faith. The attack in Kashmir has only further underscored the bond between the U.S. and India in confronting radical extremism.

“This is not just India’s fight—it’s ours too,” said one State Department official familiar with the trip. “The Vice President is fully aware of the threat Islamic extremism poses to freedom around the world.”

Modi: “They Will Not Be Spared”

Prime Minister Modi condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms and promised vengeance.

“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice,” Modi posted on social media. “Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will only grow stronger.”

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed he will be traveling to Kashmir to assess the security situation firsthand. “We will come down heavily on the perpetrators,” he warned. “No mercy.”

A History of Bloodshed

Kashmir has long been a flashpoint in the ongoing feud between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan. Since the late 1980s, when Islamist-backed insurgency began in the region, more than 40,000 people have died in the conflict.

Tuesday’s attack is hauntingly similar to other brutal ambushes. In June 2024, nine Hindu pilgrims were killed by militants on a bus. In 2017, eight more died in another temple-bound convoy attack.

And yet the global response remains tepid—often silent when the victims are Indian or Hindu.

Where’s the Global Outrage?

While American conservatives, including Trump and Vance, have condemned the attack, many in the international press remain muted.

“If this had happened in Europe or the U.S., the world would stop,” said Ramesh Patel, an Indian-American activist based in Houston. “But when it’s Hindu tourists gunned down by Islamists in Kashmir? Silence.”

He added: “We’ve seen this before. It’s time the world stops coddling terror sympathizers and stands with India.”

A Call for Action, Not Apologies

As India mourns and investigates, one thing is clear: this wasn’t just a regional tragedy—it was an attack on free people everywhere.

And it’s a reminder that when terrorists open fire on the innocent, the world must answer not with handwringing—but with force.

America stands with India. And this time, the message to terrorists must be loud and clear: you will not win.
