The Democratic Party is melting down—again. And this time, it’s not because of President Donald Trump. It’s because Joe and Jill Biden just can’t seem to leave the political spotlight, and even their closest allies are begging them to stop.
Michael LaRosa, a longtime aide and former communications director for First Lady Jill Biden, issued a stunning rebuke to the Biden family this weekend, calling their latest public reappearance a “heartbreaking and tragic mistake.”
“I love them both, but someone needs to be honest with them,” LaRosa told The Hill. “They are no longer helping the Democratic Party—they’re hurting it.”
The comments came after Joe Biden, 82, gave a fiery speech in Chicago on April 15 attacking President Trump over Social Security—his first major appearance since bowing out of the 2024 race last summer.
But instead of inspiring the base, the speech triggered panic behind closed doors. Even senior Democrats are privately fuming that the former president is once again dragging the spotlight back onto the party’s old guard—just as younger names like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gavin Newsom try to rebuild the rubble left behind.
LaRosa didn’t hold back.
“If they had advisers who actually understood the mood of the party, they would know there’s deep resentment and fatigue with both of them. People haven’t forgotten how long Joe took to step aside, and now they’re cringing all over again.”
It’s not just political insiders who are groaning. Polls show Democratic approval in Congress has cratered to a pitiful 25%. Among young voters, the Biden name carries more baggage than momentum. One DNC staffer, speaking anonymously, called the Bidens’ return “a gift to Trump wrapped in blue ribbon.”
And that’s the real issue.
Just as Republicans ramp up pressure on the White House for inflation, energy prices, and Trump’s hardline economic reset, the Biden revival is giving Democrats a fresh headache—and Republicans a fresh target.
“Trump’s numbers were slipping thanks to the economy,” Democratic strategist Brad Bannon admitted. “Now Biden comes back and reminds America why they left him behind in the first place.”
Even more damning: an internal analysis from a progressive polling group shows nearly 19 million 2020 Biden voters stayed home in 2024—many citing disappointment with his leadership and late exit.
LaRosa fears that reintroducing Biden into the national conversation will backfire badly. “This isn’t just about legacy. It’s about reality. Every time Joe Biden reappears, he reminds people of the dysfunction. That’s political suicide.”
The Bidens have yet to respond publicly. But behind the scenes, party leaders are making one thing crystal clear: Stay out of the way.
As one senior strategist bluntly put it, “The future isn’t 82. It’s time to pass the mic.”
And for once, Republicans couldn’t agree more.
