Prince Harry is back in the headlines—this time pleading with the British government to reinstate full police protection after reportedly being threatened by Al-Qaeda. But for many, the latest courtroom drama raises a simple question: if Harry wanted the perks of royalty, why did he walk away?

According to court documents released this week, the Duke of Sussex claimed he was targeted by the terror group shortly after his royal security was yanked in 2020. That decision came after he and Meghan Markle abandoned their official roles and relocated to California to live as private citizens—albeit multimillionaire ones.

Now, Harry wants British taxpayers to foot the bill again for the elite police protection he once had, saying he is in mortal danger.

“The threat was real. Al-Qaeda reportedly called for Harry’s assassination and claimed it would ‘please the Muslim community,’” argued his lawyer Shaheed Fatima during a high-stakes appeal last week at London’s Royal Courts of Justice.

The Duke, now 40, insists this isn’t about privilege—it’s about survival.

“There is a person sitting behind me whose life is at stake,” Fatima told the court, portraying Harry as a vulnerable target who’s been hung out to dry by the system. “He knows this ‘special’ protection process is inferior in every sense.”

The former royal, who once served two combat tours in Afghanistan, says his time in uniform has made him a marked man. In his memoir Spare, Harry even bragged about killing Taliban fighters—a boast that many warned could make him a target for jihadist revenge. Apparently, it did.

But critics are pushing back hard, accusing the prince of playing the victim while demanding royal treatment from the very institution he publicly slammed.

“You can’t claim to be a regular guy in Montecito and then demand a royal escort when you land at Heathrow,” one former UK Home Office official said bluntly. “Security decisions are based on need, not nostalgia.”

The heart of the case revolves around a bureaucratic decision made in 2020 by the UK’s RAVEC committee, which downgraded Harry’s protection to a “case-by-case” basis. Harry’s team claims no proper risk assessment was ever carried out—a potential procedural flaw that could tip the case in his favor.

While his legal team insists the current arrangement is “inadequate, inappropriate, and ineffective,” critics say Harry is trying to rewrite the rules for his own benefit.

“He’s asking for an elite level of police protection while living in a mansion in California and flying around on private jets,” a source familiar with UK security protocols told us. “He made his bed when he walked away from his royal duties. Now he’s realizing the cost.”

Harry has also blamed the government—and, indirectly, his own father, King Charles—for failing to intervene. Though the palace denies having the authority to influence security decisions, insiders say Harry believes Charles could act if he wanted to.

“I feel exhausted and overwhelmed,” Harry reportedly told People magazine after the hearing. “My worst fears have been confirmed.”

He added, cryptically, “People would be shocked at what’s being held back.”

A ruling is expected in the coming weeks. If Harry loses, he could be slapped with legal costs totaling nearly $2 million.

Either way, this case is yet another chapter in the prince’s ongoing saga of self-exile, security woes, and a royal family that shows no signs of welcoming him back.

  1. If he is that concerned he can put his hand into his own pocket and not rely on public money paid by tax payers. Spoilt brat. Who does he think he is. Grow up and try and be a man you lazy swab.

  2. If the average earning citizen wanted security protection, would they not pay for it? Why does a multimillionaire couple like Harry and Megan demand that someone else pay for their security? Corruption.

  3. Please protect this family! ❤️🙏🏻Whether anyone likes it or not, Harry will always be Royalty. Just because he doesn’t belong to the institution doesn’t mean he’s not Royalty!!!!

  4. It is about the children and not the parents. regardless, of the parents they do love their children. King Charles should seek to see these young children as once a day passes it can not regained. every family has differences and problems, move past and invite the maternal grandfather to the visit.
