A sunny afternoon turned into a nightmare on Italy’s picturesque Monte Faito as a cable car packed with foreign tourists suddenly plunged to the ground, killing four and leaving at least one more clinging to life. Authorities now face urgent questions about how this disaster could happen just one week after the popular tourist attraction reopened for the season.
The tragedy occurred just after 4:30 p.m. local time, when the upper cabin of the Monte Faito cable car—suspended high over a rocky mountain drop—lost tension and snapped. The result was instant devastation. Witnesses described hearing “a sharp metal screech and screams” before the cabin hurtled to the forest floor near Castellammare di Stabia, about 30 miles southeast of Naples.
Chaos in the Clouds
Rescue teams rushed to the scene but were hampered by dangerous fog and high winds. Firefighters and mountain search units worked into the night to locate survivors and retrieve bodies. At least 16 passengers in another cabin were miraculously rescued using harnesses and ropes—each lowered one by one to safety in a tense operation captured on video and now flooding social media.
A visibly shaken emergency responder told local reporters, “We’ve never seen anything like this. It was chaos. And the terrain made it nearly impossible to get people out quickly.”
Victims Identified as Foreign Tourists
Italian officials have confirmed the victims were foreign nationals, though their identities and nationalities have not yet been made public. One critically injured survivor was airlifted to Ospedale del Mare in Naples, while another is still missing amid the wreckage.
Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV), the company operating the cable car, initially claimed “all passengers were fine and descending safely.” But just an hour later, contact was lost with the upper cabin. EAV’s chairman, Umberto De Gregorio, later admitted, “The cabin at the top has crashed. Casualties are feared. This is a tragedy for our nation and for every family affected.”
Investigation Underway
The Torre Annunziata Prosecutor’s Office has already opened an investigation. Prosecutors are reportedly looking into mechanical failure, human error, and even the possibility of neglected maintenance. The cable car had only resumed operations days earlier after being closed for the winter season.
This isn’t the first time Italy has suffered such a tragedy. In 2021, a cable car near Lake Maggiore plummeted to the ground, killing 14. That accident, caused by disabled safety brakes, led to nationwide outrage and calls for reform—reforms some now fear never truly came.
National Response
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, currently in Washington meeting with President Donald Trump, issued a statement of condolences from the U.S. capital: “I express my deepest sympathies to the families affected by this appalling event. The government is monitoring the investigation closely. We must determine exactly what failed and why.”
Meloni is reportedly in direct contact with Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci and Emergency Services Chief Fabio Ciciliano. American officials have not yet commented on whether U.S. citizens were among the victims.
A Systemic Failure or Tragic Fluke?
Conservative lawmakers in Italy are already demanding a full review of all cable car systems across the country. Some are calling the crash “a symptom of broader institutional decay and safety failures” tied to mismanagement of public infrastructure.
“This is what happens when you trust your life to government-run transport systems,” said Italian MP Guglielmo Bianchi. “We need transparency, accountability, and immediate answers. These were foreign tourists who came to enjoy our country. Now their families are left grieving.”
Tourism Under Threat
With Italy relying heavily on tourism, especially from Americans and other Western visitors, this disaster threatens to damage confidence in travel to one of Europe’s most scenic regions. And with the summer season approaching, the question remains: Will tourists feel safe coming back?
As investigators continue combing through wreckage and officials scramble for answers, one thing is clear—this is not just a tragic accident. It’s a national scandal in the making.
