A violent arson plot targeting Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro nearly turned deadly after police say the suspect not only firebombed the governor’s mansion but also planned to beat the Democrat politician with a hammer if he got the chance.

The alleged attacker, 38-year-old Cody Balmer, is now facing charges of attempted murder, terrorism, and aggravated arson. According to a police affidavit, Balmer admitted to hurling three Molotov cocktails into the home while Shapiro and his family slept upstairs.

“He told investigators he hated the governor and wanted to hurt him,” Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo said. “He would’ve used the hammer on him if they crossed paths.”

Authorities say Balmer jumped the mansion’s fence in the early hours of Sunday morning, broke in through a window using a hammer, and ignited multiple fires throughout the historic building.

Surveillance footage released by state officials shows the horrifying moments Balmer smashed glass and tossed firebombs into the house. He then entered the residence and started additional fires before fleeing through an emergency exit, narrowly avoiding security officers.

“Photos of the aftermath look like something out of a war zone,” said one law enforcement source. “Burnt walls, blackened floors, smoke damage everywhere. It’s a miracle no one was killed.”

Governor Shapiro confirmed that he and his wife and children were inside the mansion when troopers pounded on their bedroom doors around 2 a.m., yelling for them to evacuate.

“We got out safely,” Shapiro told reporters Sunday. “But make no mistake—this was a targeted, deliberate act meant to terrorize.”

The attack came just hours after the Shapiros hosted a Passover Seder with friends and family in the now-charred dining room. Shapiro hinted that the motive may go beyond personal hatred, possibly touching on anti-Semitic intent.

“If this was meant to intimidate the Jewish community, it won’t work,” he said. “We’re celebrating our faith again tonight, in defiance of fear.”

Balmer later confessed to the arson during an interview at Harrisburg police headquarters, according to officials. His ex-girlfriend tipped off authorities after he admitted to her that he started the blaze.

Police say they also recovered a jacket with unique shoulder patches from Balmer’s home that matched surveillance footage.

Balmer’s criminal history includes charges of assault, theft, and forgery. He was also scheduled to appear in court this week for a separate case involving a violent altercation last year.

His mother, Christie Balmer, told CBS News that her son has a history of mental illness and recently stopped taking his medication.

“I called four different departments trying to get him help,” she said. “No one would do anything. Now look what’s happened.”

The attempted assassination of a sitting governor has sparked national attention, though notable silence from the White House. As of Monday morning, former President Donald Trump had not issued a statement condemning the attack.

Political commentators are already questioning whether the administration’s muted response would be the same if a Republican governor had been targeted.

“This could’ve been a mass casualty event,” said one former federal security official. “If Balmer had caught the governor in the hallway, we’d be talking about a very different outcome.”

Meanwhile, Shapiro called for unity—but also issued a stern warning.

“This violence—no matter where it comes from—is tearing us apart,” he said. “It’s time we wake up as a nation. This is not normal.”

The investigation is ongoing. Balmer remains in custody without bail.

  1. If Shapiro would close his mouth no one like him and he is only antagonizing everyone ..step down SHAPIRO. WE NEED SOMEONE THAT CARES ABOUT US AND AMERICA

  2. WOW…the tables have turned and now the Dems are accusing President Trump of being silent after one of their “super stars” got attacked. WHERE WAS THE DEMS WHEN THE JEWISH HATRED STARTED AT THE COLLEGES AND WHERE WERE THEY WHEN TRUMP WAS TARGETED TWICE FOR ASSASSINATION? THEY stayed silent, and didn’t condemn the hatred nor the attacks…Have they ever thought that President Trump is staying silent until the investigation is over before he makes any comments? I know that I wouldn’t say anything until all the facts are in BEFORE I made any comments.
