A Massachusetts Democrat is facing federal charges after allegedly looting tens of thousands of dollars from a homebuilder trade group to bankroll his campaign, pay personal bills, and—bizarrely—consult psychics.
State Rep. Christopher Flanagan, a Democrat representing Cape Cod, was indicted Friday on multiple federal charges, including five counts of wire fraud and one count of falsifying records. Prosecutors say he used his powerful position to line his own pockets while pretending to be a trustworthy public servant.
According to the Justice Department, Flanagan didn’t just misuse funds—he crafted an elaborate cover-up, inventing fake identities and telling investigators that a non-existent “conservative group” funded some of his campaign mailers.
“Flanagan defrauded the very organization he was supposed to serve,” said U.S. Attorney Leah Foley. “He stole money and then went to extraordinary lengths to cover it up—fabricating fake personas to mislead those who questioned his conduct.”
A Psychic Scheme and a Trail of Lies
Among the more jaw-dropping details: Flanagan used several hundred dollars in stolen funds for “personal psychic services,” according to court documents. The payments were debited directly from the Home Builders Association’s credit union account in 2022. While hardworking Americans tightened their belts under inflation, a Democratic lawmaker was swiping donor cash to hear from the spirit realm.
It didn’t stop there.
Investigators say Flanagan used more than $36,000 in stolen funds between 2021 and 2023 to pay off mortgage bills, cover credit card debt, and fund a lavish lifestyle that included high-end shopping trips to Macy’s and Best Buy.
Despite collecting an $81,600 salary from the Home Builders Association and roughly $100,000 from the state legislature, Flanagan was allegedly drowning in personal debt. He tried to solve that problem the old-fashioned way: by stealing.
He disguised purchases as “technology services,” but receipts told a different story. Prosecutors say he bought a Bluetooth speaker, an electric dryer, an air conditioner, and piles of men’s designer clothes. A Target run listed as “office supplies” turned out to be children’s toys and clothing—delivered straight to Flanagan’s house.
Fake Names, Real Crimes
To dodge accountability, Flanagan allegedly created a fake person named “Jeanne Louise” and claimed this fictional character was behind a series of political mailers supporting his campaign. He said she belonged to a conservative group. But the feds weren’t buying it.
“This was an appalling breach of public trust,” Foley said.
Pressure Mounts from Both Sides
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, a fellow Democrat, called on Flanagan to resign immediately. State Republican leaders had already demanded his resignation earlier this year—but Flanagan arrogantly brushed them off.
“Especially on the eve of Jan. 6, I’m not going to engage in political mudslinging,” he scoffed at the time.
But now, with federal prosecutors closing in and the public disgusted, the question isn’t if Flanagan will step down—it’s whether he’ll do it before or after trading his dress shirts for a prison jumpsuit.
If convicted, Flanagan could face up to 40 years behind bars.
No word yet from the psychic on whether he saw that coming.
