A once-buried CIA document is reigniting controversy and chilling curiosity after detailing what may be one of the most disturbing extraterrestrial encounters on record — a Cold War-era clash between Soviet troops and alleged alien beings that left 23 soldiers dead in an unimaginable way.
But this isn’t just a sci-fi fever dream. The report, declassified in 2000, describes an alleged 1980s incident where Soviet forces shot down a UFO during a training mission in Siberia — and were reportedly turned to stone in retaliation.
“It reads like something out of a horror movie,” said Josh Hooper, host of the AI or Evil podcast, which recently revisited the CIA file. “But this came from a U.S. intelligence document. That’s what makes it so disturbing.”
What the CIA Saw Behind the Iron Curtain
The CIA report, a summary of a larger 250-page KGB intelligence file, was translated and obtained by U.S. agents after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It centers on a dramatic encounter in a remote region of Siberia sometime between 1989 and 1990.
According to the file, Soviet troops on a training exercise noticed a low-flying, silent UFO hovering over their position. For reasons still unclear, the unit fired a surface-to-air missile at the craft — and hit it.
That’s when the story takes a terrifying turn.
The Alleged Revenge of “The Greys”
Eyewitnesses claimed five humanoid beings emerged from the crash site. They were described as small, with large heads and black eyes — matching the stereotypical image of “The Greys,” a race often referenced by UFO researchers, alien abductees, and popular media alike.
But instead of surrendering or fleeing, the aliens allegedly joined together, forming a single, pulsing sphere of energy. Then — a blinding white flash. The report states 23 Soviet soldiers were instantly petrified. Literally.
“Turned into stone poles,” the CIA file reads. “A horrific picture of revenge on the part of extraterrestrial creatures — a picture that makes one’s blood freeze.”
Only two soldiers survived. According to the report, they were standing in a shaded area and somehow shielded from the mysterious blast.
Alien Technology Far Beyond Earth?
Analysis of the remains reportedly found that the victims’ bodies had been transformed into a stone-like material similar to limestone. Scientists cited in the file said the transformation was likely caused by an unknown form of energy — something beyond current human technology.
“A source of energy that is still unknown to Earthlings,” the document states ominously.
Even now, experts remain skeptical — but intrigued.
Dr. Melissa Raines, a physicist at the University of Michigan, said that while the account is “almost certainly exaggerated or misinterpreted,” it does raise interesting questions about directed energy weapons.
“We know high-frequency electromagnetic pulses can drastically alter matter,” she said. “But turning flesh to stone? That’s well outside known science.”
A Story Hidden by Cold War Secrecy
The alleged incident remained buried for decades, surfacing only after the KGB’s collapse. It was first reported publicly by the Ukrainian newspaper Holos Ukrayiny in 1993, then picked up by a Canadian outlet. The CIA included it in a translated report under the subject: Paper Reports Alleged Evidence on Mishap Involving UFO.
The remains of the craft — and the petrified soldiers — were reportedly taken to a top-secret facility outside Moscow. Since then, no official Soviet or Russian confirmation has emerged.
Hooper believes that’s exactly how both U.S. and Soviet officials wanted it.
“There’s a long history of governments hiding alien encounters under the guise of national security,” he said. “And back in the Cold War? There was no appetite for admitting we weren’t the most powerful force on Earth.”
Why This Story Still Matters in 2025
In the years since the Roswell crash of 1947 — another case tied to sightings of the so-called “Greys” — Americans have become increasingly aware of unexplained aerial phenomena, especially after recent Pentagon reports confirmed hundreds of UFO sightings by military pilots.
But this case stands out not just for its violence, but for what it suggests: that contact with non-human intelligence might not always be peaceful.
“If true,” said Hooper, “this changes everything we assume about the nature of alien life. It’s not just curiosity. It’s capability — and maybe even hostility.”
Whether fact, Cold War fiction, or something in between, the story is spreading fast among UFO researchers, conspiracy theorists, and ordinary citizens demanding answers.
And in a time when trust in government secrecy is at a low, the question isn’t just did this really happen? — it’s what else haven’t they told us?

If introduced as a benevolent alien race the population would be more likely to accept their presences. To chase their crafts and attempt capture will only create hostility towards them.
