What should have been the happiest day of their lives turned into an unimaginable nightmare for newlyweds Tom Davis and Eleni Vrettos. Just minutes after exchanging vows, the couple received devastating news—their family home had exploded, leaving them homeless and uncovering a shocking betrayal from someone they had invited to celebrate their union.

Authorities have confirmed that the explosion, which occurred in the Chicago suburb of Cicero, was intentionally set by a wedding guest, 31-year-old Anthony Avila-Puebla. His body was discovered in the wreckage of the home after the fiery blast. Investigators say he slipped away from the ceremony, parked his car nearby, and was seen on surveillance footage carrying multiple jugs of a flammable substance into the home before it erupted into flames.

A Bride’s Worst Nightmare

“I ran here in my wedding dress, straight down the alley, and stood in a neighbor’s yard just watching in disbelief,” said Eleni Vrettos, who had just finished saying ‘I do’ when she started getting urgent messages about an explosion. “Everything was just smoke at that point.”

The home had been in the Vrettos family for nearly 40 years and was uninsured at the time due to an ongoing transition in coverage. The newlyweds, who had recently moved in together, lost everything they owned.

The Mysterious Arsonist

Authorities have not disclosed a clear motive but confirmed Avila-Puebla had a personal connection to the home through someone who lived there. What drove him to such an extreme act remains unclear.

While some guests assumed he had simply left early, surveillance footage paints a disturbing picture. “He walked right in with those jugs and never came back out,” said a law enforcement official familiar with the case.

Adding to the tragedy, six cats that lived in the home remain missing, and the fire spread to a neighboring building, displacing 11 families.

A Community Rallies Together

A GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $57,000 for the newlyweds as they try to rebuild their lives. “This was more than a house—it was where I grew up, where Tom and I were starting our life together,” said Vrettos.

Meanwhile, the Cicero Police Department continues its investigation, searching for answers as to why a wedding guest turned a day of joy into a moment of horror.
