A dream wedding ended in horror early Sunday when masked gunmen ambushed a newlywed couple outside their lavish reception in the sleepy French village of Goult, leaving the bride dead, the groom and a child gravely wounded, and investigators scrambling for answers.
Authorities say the violence erupted just after 4:30 a.m. on June 22, as the celebration wound down and guests began to head home. According to police, the masked shooters emerged from the shadows and opened fire as the couple and their loved ones were leaving the venue.
“We heard screams, then rapid gunshots,” a neighbor told French television. “It was chaos. People were running everywhere.”
Within seconds, the 27-year-old bride lay fatally wounded. Her husband, a 30-year-old man with a criminal record, and a 13-year-old family member were both shot and critically injured as they tried to flee in their car. The groom’s sister, who police say has a history of violent crime, was also wounded in the ambush.
In a shocking twist, one of the gunmen was killed on the spot after being struck by the couple’s vehicle as they desperately attempted to escape, according to local news reports.
Authorities have not released the names of the bride or groom, but investigators quickly revealed that the groom was known to police for multiple offenses, raising suspicions that the attack may have been a targeted hit rather than random violence.
“This was not a simple quarrel,” Goult Mayor Didier Perello declared during a tense press briefing. “Everything suggests this was a planned, targeted assault.”
French gendarmes rushed to secure the area as investigators launched a massive manhunt for additional suspects. The Avignon prosecutor’s office confirmed they have opened a probe for “murder and attempted murder by an organized gang.”
A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, called the crime “unprecedented” for the usually peaceful region. “To see such calculated violence at a wedding — it’s chilling. We’re following several leads, including gang connections,” the official said.
As forensic teams combed the blood-stained street for clues, shaken residents gathered nearby, some weeping openly. “A wedding should be the happiest day of your life,” one local said. “Now, it’s a nightmare.”
Authorities continue to investigate the deadly attack, urging anyone with information to come forward. “No one should have to fear for their life on their wedding day,” Mayor Perello said.
As France reels from the shocking tragedy, questions remain: Who ordered the hit, and will justice come for a bride whose life was cut short just moments after saying “I do”?
