In a harrowing ordeal that unfolded off the coast of New Zealand, at least 16 people were injured when the Crown Princess cruise ship was hit by violent winds, causing it to tilt sharply. The incident, which took place on February 25, left passengers gripping tables, dodging falling objects, and watching in shock as water from the deck pool flooded dining areas.
The 113,000-ton luxury liner was midway through a 14-day round-trip journey from Sydney, Australia, when the powerful storm struck while navigating the notoriously unpredictable Fiordland region. According to passengers and crew, the sudden tilt sent dishes, furniture, and even people sliding across floors as the ship struggled to stabilize.
“I Had to Hang On for Dear Life”
Passengers on board described moments of fear as they clung to whatever they could to keep from falling.
“I was just walking my usual lap around the deck when suddenly, I felt the entire boat shift,” recalled one passenger. “Within seconds, people were hanging on to chairs and tables. I had to grab a railing just to stay on my feet.”
Another stunned traveler recounted the chaos inside the ship’s dining area:
“Tables and chairs went sliding across the room. A girl on a chair actually slid toward the pool—it was like a movie scene,” the passenger told reporters.
What Went Wrong?
Princess Cruises, the company operating the Crown Princess, confirmed the ship encountered unexpectedly strong winds during a navigational course change, briefly causing it to tilt beyond its normal movement before stabilizing.
“Our crew responded immediately to correct the situation, and at no point was the ship’s safety compromised,” a Princess Cruises spokesperson stated. “A total of 13 guests and three crew members sustained minor injuries, and all are doing well.”
Despite assurances from the cruise line, passengers remain shaken by the incident, which they say was far more dramatic than the official statement suggests.
“The buffet area was soaked from water that poured in from the deck. It was a mess. The kitchen was destroyed—plates everywhere, food all over the floor,” said one witness.
Luxury at Risk? Growing Concerns Over Cruise Safety
While the Crown Princess resumed operations without further disruption, the event has raised concerns over cruise line preparedness in extreme weather.
The Fiordland region, where the ship was sailing, is known for its dramatic landscapes but also treacherous and fast-changing weather conditions. Some maritime experts argue cruise lines need to reconsider routes that put passengers at risk of such violent and unpredictable conditions.
With over 3,000 passengers and 1,200 crew members on board, the consequences could have been far worse. While no structural damage was reported, videos circulating online show disorder, panic, and waterlogged floors—a far cry from the relaxing luxury experience many had expected.
“We paid a lot of money for this cruise, and while accidents happen, this was something else,” one passenger fumed. “The crew handled it well, but honestly, I don’t think we should have been in that situation in the first place.”
As the cruise industry continues expanding, with bigger ships and more adventurous itineraries, the question remains: Are cruise lines doing enough to prioritize safety over spectacle?
For now, passengers aboard the Crown Princess are just grateful to be back on smooth waters—but this trip will be one they’ll never forget.
