Stephen Hawking, one of the most brilliant minds of the modern era, issued a grave warning before his passing in 2018: Humanity’s days on Earth are numbered. With artificial intelligence, nuclear weapons, and deadly engineered viruses on the rise, the late physicist predicted mankind has less than a century to escape the planet—or face extinction.
Hawking, who defied the odds after being diagnosed with ALS at 21, spent decades unraveling the mysteries of the universe. But in his final years, his concerns turned to Earth’s fate. He believed humanity had reached a dangerous turning point, saying, “We are at risk of destroying ourselves with our own intelligence before we can develop the technology to escape.”
The Clock is Ticking
Hawking’s dire prediction wasn’t just science fiction. He calculated that while the likelihood of an apocalyptic event in any given year remains low, the probability increases over time, making it virtually inevitable within the next thousand years. “By then,” he explained, “we should have colonized other planets, ensuring our survival. But we won’t be ready for at least another hundred years.”
This century, according to Hawking, is the most precarious. Space colonization is still a distant dream, while existential threats—many of our own making—grow stronger by the day. He urged caution, warning that we cannot afford to be reckless with emerging technology.
Artificial Intelligence: Savior or Executioner?
One of Hawking’s biggest concerns was artificial intelligence. While mainstream media often praises AI’s potential, he saw a darker side. “AI could be the best thing to happen to humanity—or the worst. If we are not careful, it could lead to our destruction.”
He joined over 1,000 prominent scientists and tech leaders in signing an open letter cautioning against autonomous weapons, stating: “If any major power develops AI weapons, a global arms race is unavoidable. The outcome could be catastrophic.”
Are We Listening?
Despite Hawking’s warnings, world governments have continued down a perilous path. Military AI development is accelerating. Global tensions remain high. And scientists are tinkering with gene-editing technologies that could have unintended consequences.
Former NASA scientist Dr. Robert Zubrin echoed Hawking’s concerns, telling The Daily Express, “Hawking was absolutely right. We are playing with fire, and people don’t realize how fragile civilization really is.”
Yet, Hawking remained cautiously optimistic. He believed humanity could navigate these dangers—if we wake up in time. “We are not going to stop progress,” he said, “so we must recognize the dangers and control them.”
But as technology advances faster than government regulations and common sense, one question looms: Are we running out of time?

Just another Leftist who didn’t know Trump would be back after a brief hiatus to get us all in the right direction…
The direction of moving faster toward extinction….The moron wants to invest 500 Billions toward a faster AI development while at the same time emasculating the regulators…..But seeing this level of stupidity of electing a criminal idiot…maybe we should go extinct
I’d like to know why, all of the things to read nowadays, are always stoked with FEAR? I’v read three articals today that are warnings of death, war, horriable illness doomsday BS I don’t understand.
Don\’t worry – the deep state is going to get rid of most of us before a century. We won\’t have to worry about extinction!
AI development is accelerating because we have no way to get every nation on the planet to agree to put a stop to it. As long as China and Russia, and other nations of interest, will continue to develop better AI, we cannot afford to halt our research. That is the mindset of military professionals, and it makes a certain amount of sense.
