New Bat Virus Discovered at Wuhan Lab Accused of Leak Raising Fears of Another Pandemic

A team of researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the same facility at the center of worldwide controversy over COVID-19’s origins, has identified a new bat coronavirus with alarming similarities to the deadly virus that caused the 2020 pandemic.

The virus, named HKU5-CoV-2, is capable of binding to human cells through the same receptor used by SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Though no human infections have been reported yet, the potential for animal-to-human transmission remains a serious concern, according to findings published in the scientific journal Cell.

Dr. Shi Zhengli, a virologist often referred to as China’s “Bat Lady” due to her extensive research on coronaviruses, led the study. “This virus warrants further investigation, as the possibility of human spillover cannot be ruled out,” the researchers noted. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), a long-time critic of the Chinese Communist Party’s lack of transparency, stated, “This is exactly why we need to hold China accountable. If they’re playing with fire again, the world deserves to know.”
