A catastrophic fire erupted in a Brooklyn home Friday morning, injuring nine individuals, including three firefighters. The flames tore through a three-story building in the Crown Heights neighborhood, forcing a swift response from emergency services.
The fire, which began shortly before 10:30 a.m., spread rapidly across the second and third floors of the residence located on Eastern Parkway near New York Avenue. Authorities confirmed that the fire escalated to two alarms, prompting a large-scale response from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).
In total, 25 FDNY units, along with 106 firefighters and EMS personnel, rushed to the scene. “The conditions were extremely dangerous. Our crews fought hard to bring it under control,” said FDNY Deputy Chief Maria Dawson.
While battling the inferno, one firefighter sustained injuries that are not life-threatening. Two additional firefighters were treated for minor injuries on-site.
Among the civilians, one individual was critically injured, while five others sustained injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening.
Local residents described hearing the sound of crackling flames and seeing thick smoke billowing from the building. “It felt like the whole block was on fire,” said Erica Thompson, a neighbor who witnessed the blaze from her window. “I saw firefighters running toward the building, but it was already so bad.”
By 11:40 a.m., the FDNY had the fire under control. However, investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blaze.
“This is still an active investigation,” FDNY spokesperson Peter O’Connor stated. “We are working diligently to understand what sparked this devastating fire.”
As the community recovers, questions remain about the future of the damaged building and the displaced residents. Firefighters, meanwhile, continue to brave dangerous conditions as they address lingering hot spots.
