A routine hearing in a New Mexico courtroom turned into complete chaos when three people rushed the defendant in a homicide case, sparking a wild brawl filled with flying fists and kicks. The January 31 incident, caught on courtroom video, was only stopped when a law enforcement officer drew a stun gun to protect the defendant from further assault.

Felony charges have now been filed against two men for battery and assault on a public official. The men, clearly enraged over the death of a relative, charged at the defendant during the hearing.

The first man to charge was Carlos Lucero, who yelled at deputies, “he killed my niece like a coward,” according to CBS affiliate KRQE. The second man, Pete Ysasi, was also involved, although his exact connection to the case remains unclear.

Also arrested in the incident was 34-year-old Jamie Lucero, who was seen in the video hitting both the defendant and an officer with a chair.

Despite the presence of corrections officers and security personnel, the altercation was a reminder that courtrooms can still be volatile. Just last year, a defendant in Nevada attacked a judge, throwing himself over the bench and pulling her hair, leading to a bloody brawl with court officials.

Katina Watson, the court executive officer for New Mexico’s Second Judicial District, told KRQE that these types of incidents are sadly not uncommon. She commended the officer who acted quickly to restore order, but did not mention any potential changes to security measures.
