Selena Gomez, the popular actress and singer, briefly shared a tearful Instagram video addressing recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportations. The post, which included the caption “I’m sorry” and a Mexican flag emoji, was swiftly deleted, but not before it ignited a firestorm online.

Over the first weekend of President Donald Trump’s second term, ICE carried out nationwide operations targeting over 1,200 illegal immigrants with criminal charges or convictions. The White House released photos of deportation flights, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt tweeting, “Deportation flights have begun.” The administration’s actions sparked both praise and criticism, with many conservatives applauding the crackdown on illegal immigration.

In the video, Gomez, born and raised in Texas, expressed deep sorrow over the deportations. “All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand,” she said while visibly crying. “I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I’ll try everything, I promise.” Moments later, she shared another now-deleted post, writing, “Apparently it’s not okay to show empathy for people.”

The deleted posts quickly became fodder for social media commentary. Piers Morgan, a vocal critic of celebrity activism, tweeted, “Posting yourself weeping over illegal immigrant criminals being deported is a new level of absurd celebrity narcissism.” Others, including conservative commentators, accused Gomez of overlooking the criminal nature of the individuals targeted in the raids.

However, supporters applauded her for bringing attention to the emotional toll of immigration policies. “Selena is using her platform to highlight human suffering. That’s courage,” wrote one fan.

Gomez has frequently spoken about her family’s immigration story. In a 2019 interview with Time Magazine, she shared, “In the 1970s, my aunt crossed the border from Mexico to the United States hidden in the back of a truck. My grandparents followed, and my father was born in Texas soon after. In 1992, I was born a U.S. citizen thanks to their bravery and sacrifice.”

She added, “Over the past four decades, members of my family have worked hard to gain United States citizenship. Undocumented immigration is an issue I think about every day. I never forget how blessed I am to have been born in this country thanks to my family and the grace of circumstance.”

Gomez also executive produced the Netflix series Living Undocumented, a documentary exploring the challenges faced by undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

The controversy around Gomez’s posts highlights the deep divisions in America over immigration policy. While many conservatives argue that strict enforcement of immigration laws is necessary for national security, progressives often emphasize the human impact of deportations.

Mississippi State Representative John Carter, a staunch supporter of the ICE operations, stated, “We have laws for a reason. We can’t allow emotions to dictate national security.” In contrast, immigration advocate Maria Torres countered, “These are families being torn apart. Compassion and security are not mutually exclusive.”

Selena Gomez’s brief but emotional post has reignited debates over immigration, celebrity activism, and the role of empathy in political discourse. Whether her words will influence public opinion or policy remains to be seen, but they have undoubtedly added another layer to an already complex and contentious issue.

  1. Please. This Country does not have the money to continue giving these law breakers free housing and free food and everything else. I do not hate Mexicans or people from any other country\’s, but We as American people have laws in place that need to be followed in order to come into America. Follow our laws and I will welcome you with open arms. And yes it\’s as simple as that.
