Ninety-nine-year-old Hollywood icon Dick Van Dyke has stayed put in his Malibu home despite raging wildfires devastating Southern California. The legendary actor and his wife, Arlene Silver, are relying on a gas generator and sheer resilience to weather the storm.

“Dick is more comfortable here than anywhere else,” Silver, 53, shared in a heartfelt Instagram Live on January 12. “It’s easier to take care of him here.”

The inferno, known as the Palisades Fire, has destroyed large swaths of the Pacific Palisades and surrounding areas, displacing thousands of residents. Despite the chaos, Van Dyke and Silver’s $8 million Malibu home remains standing, with only minor damage to their guest house.

“We’ve lost power and regular electricity, so we’re using a camper to cook and charge our devices,” Silver explained. The couple’s determination to stay in their beloved home underscores the challenges many Californians face as wildfires become increasingly frequent and destructive.

Van Dyke credits his neighbors for helping him through a close call during the Franklin Fire last month.

“Three neighbors came and carried me out,” he recounted in a December interview with NBC’s “Today.” “They even put out a fire in the guest house. They saved me.”

This month’s Palisades Fire has proven even more devastating, with countless homes reduced to ash and residents like Van Dyke improvising daily survival tactics. “Keeping Dick warm and entertained has been my top priority,” Silver said. “He’s a trooper. I don’t know of any other senior who would put up with this.”

Malibu’s history of wildfires is long and harrowing. Yet, for Van Dyke, the coastal community is home—a sentiment echoed by many long-time residents.

“We’ve been through this before,” Van Dyke remarked in a reflective Facebook post after the December evacuation. “This is where we belong.”

Even as they face daunting conditions, the couple’s commitment to staying in Malibu serves as a testament to their love for the area and their enduring bond.

The fires have reignited debates about California’s wildfire preparedness and the toll on aging residents. While the Van Dykes have managed to stay safe, their story highlights the vulnerability of seniors during natural disasters.

“It’s tough, but we’re tougher,” Silver said with a smile. Their story—a mix of courage, community, and a touch of Hollywood magic—reminds us all of the resilience needed to face life’s trials.
