In a moment fraught with unspoken tension, former President Donald Trump and his onetime vice president, Mike Pence, crossed paths for the first time in nearly four years. The occasion was solemn—a memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., honoring the late President Jimmy Carter.
As Trump and his wife, Melania, entered the cathedral, Pence rose from his seat to greet them. The two men exchanged a brief handshake, devoid of smiles or warmth. The interaction lasted mere seconds before Trump and Melania moved to their seats. Karen Pence, seated beside her husband, notably refrained from engaging, her gaze fixed elsewhere.
The encounter was confirmed by CNN’s Jake Tapper as the first meeting between Trump and Pence since they left office in January 2021. In the years since, their relationship has been marked by sharp divisions, particularly over the events surrounding the 2020 presidential election and the January 6 Capitol riot.

Trump has openly criticized Pence for refusing to challenge the certification of President Joe Biden’s election victory—a move Pence has repeatedly defended as his constitutional duty. Court documents have since revealed that as rioters stormed the Capitol on January 6, some chanting “Hang Mike Pence,” Trump allegedly dismissed concerns for Pence’s safety with a curt, “So what?”
Speaking later about the chants, Trump appeared to minimize the threat, saying, “Well, the people were very angry.” Pence, however, has consistently condemned the riot, calling it a “dark day in American history” and emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law.
On Thursday, the former vice president showed a measured politeness, offering a greeting despite their fraught history. However, the body language told a story of its own: formal, distant, and far removed from the camaraderie they once displayed in office.
Observers in attendance noted the gravity of the moment. “You could feel the tension in the air,” remarked one attendee seated near the aisle. “It was like watching two men bound by history but separated by deep personal and political wounds.”
Pence, who has since distanced himself from Trump while maintaining ties to the conservative base, has hinted at broader ambitions, possibly even a presidential bid. Meanwhile, Trump remains a dominant figure within the Republican Party, wielding influence that few dare to challenge.
