In a grim twist to what should have been a joyful Christmas celebration, a family in southern Brazil suffered an unimaginable tragedy. A Christmas Eve cake laced with arsenic claimed the lives of three women and left three others hospitalized. Now, police have arrested a family member in connection with the horrifying incident.
The poisoning took place in Torres, a coastal city in Rio Grande do Sul. Seven family members were gathered to celebrate the holiday. A homemade cake was served, but only six of the attendees partook.
All six fell gravely ill, with three succumbing to the effects of the poison. The victims were sisters Maida and Neuza, and Neuza’s daughter Tatiana. The lone individual who abstained from eating the cake survived unscathed.
Authorities have identified the main suspect as the 49-year-old daughter-in-law of Zeli dos Anjos, the 60-year-old family matriarch who baked the cake. Police revealed that the suspect had harbored long-standing grievances against the family, spanning over two decades. She was arrested on Sunday and is facing charges of triple homicide and three counts of attempted homicide.
“This was a calculated and deliberate act,” stated Chief Inspector Carlos Machado at a press conference. “The evidence leaves no room for doubt.”
Expert analysis uncovered staggering levels of arsenic in the victims’ bodies. Marguet Mittmann, director of the General Institute of Expertise, confirmed, “The arsenic concentrations found in urine and stomach samples are not only toxic but lethal. The levels ranged from 80 to 350 times the maximum permitted amount in food.”
Investigators traced the contamination to the flour used in the cake’s preparation. Tests revealed arsenic levels in the flour that were 2,700 times the legal limit. “This is not a case of accidental contamination,” Mittmann emphasized. “The flour was deliberately poisoned.”
Among those hospitalized are Zeli dos Anjos and her 10-year-old great-grandson. Both remain in intensive care, fighting for their lives. “We’re doing everything possible to save them,” a hospital spokesperson said. The family is rallying around the survivors while grappling with an overwhelming loss.
The tragedy has left the small city of Torres reeling. Neighbors described the victims as kind and deeply rooted in the community. Local pastor Paulo Mendes, who officiated at the victims’ memorial service, reflected, “It’s hard to comprehend such malice during a time meant for love and togetherness. This family didn’t just lose loved ones; they lost their sense of safety.”
Police are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses. They’re working to piece together the timeline and motive behind this heinous act. “The suspect’s history of animosity toward the family is a critical element of this case,” said Machado. “We are committed to seeking justice for the victims.”
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers that can lurk even in the most trusted circles. As the investigation unfolds, the family and community are left to mourn, reflect, and seek answers.
For now, the tragedy stands as a chilling example of how deep-seated grievances can escalate into unspeakable violence, casting a long shadow over the Christmas season in this small Brazilian city.
