In a devastating incident, Pastor Luke Walford, a 40-year-old youth leader from Rockhampton, Queensland, lost his life in a shark attack on Saturday, December 28, while spearfishing near Humpy Island in the Keppel Bay Islands National Park.

The tragedy unfolded around 4:30 p.m. local time when a shark attacked Walford as he pursued one of his passions. Despite efforts to save him, Walford succumbed to his injuries before 6 p.m., according to a police report. This marks the first fatal shark attack in Queensland in over four years, as noted by The Guardian.

Walford, well-known for his devotion to his church and his community, was described as a vibrant and caring individual. The Cathedral of Praise Church in Rockhampton, where he served for more than a decade, honored him in a heartfelt Facebook post, accompanied by photographs capturing his joyous spirit.

“It’s with deep sorrow that we share the tragic news of Pastor Luke Walford’s passing,” the post read. “He was attacked by a shark while doing something he loved — spearfishing, a passion passed down to him by his father.”

One photo depicted Walford strumming a guitar in a brightly colored shirt, while another showed him addressing a crowd with his characteristic enthusiasm.

Church leaders highlighted Walford’s enduring legacy: “I’ve had the privilege of watching Luke grow from a child to a remarkable young man. Over the last 10 to 13 years, he became a cornerstone of our church, inspiring countless young people with his unwavering faith and kindness.”

Walford’s death has left his congregation and the broader community reeling. Donna Kirkland, a local lawmaker, shared her grief, saying, “Luke was a friend to me and to so many others. My prayers and heartfelt condolences go to his beautiful family and everyone whose lives he touched.”

Church officials urged members to find solace in their faith during this challenging time. “Our prayers are with Luke’s family, especially his wife and mother. We ask God to provide peace and strength as they navigate this unimaginable loss,” read the post.

According to the BBC, Australia recorded four shark attacks in 2024, second only to the United States in such incidents. Shark attacks remain rare, but experts suggest climate change and human activity may be altering marine ecosystems, potentially increasing interactions between sharks and humans.

Dr. Megan Carter, a marine biologist, explained, “Sharks often mistake humans for prey, particularly in areas with limited visibility. Education and awareness are vital to reducing risks.”

Walford’s congregation and community have taken to social media to share their memories. One commenter described him as “the most generous person” they had ever met. Another wrote, “His energy was infectious, and his dedication to helping others was unmatched.”

As tributes continue to pour in, the legacy of Pastor Luke Walford’s life of service, faith, and love remains a beacon of hope and inspiration. The Cathedral of Praise Church plans a memorial service to celebrate his life and the profound impact he had on everyone who knew him.

  1. Sorry this happened, but the fish got their revenge. How can he have been so kind and yet took delight in murdering his fellow creatures.
