A striking AI-generated image of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children, Archie and Lilibet, has sparked a wave of anger on social media. The image, which began circulating just weeks after the couple’s official Christmas card, has raised concerns about privacy, ethics, and the power of artificial intelligence.

The Sussexes’ official holiday card, released by their Archewell Foundation, featured six photos of Harry and Meghan engaging in charity work, including one of the couple with their arms outstretched as their children, Archie and Lilibet, ran toward them. However, the children’s faces were not visible in the photo.

Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have maintained a relatively low profile when it comes to their children. Archie, now five, and Lilibet, three, have rarely been photographed in public, a decision which many believe is part of the couple’s effort to shield them from media scrutiny. The family relocated to Montecito, California, following the fallout from Meghan’s mental health struggles and accusations of racism within the royal household regarding Archie’s skin color.

But the calm was shattered when an AI-generated image of the Sussex children surfaced online. The image, which showed Archie and Lilibet appearing much older than in previous photos, was quickly debunked by fans and digital sleuths.

The image was presented as a Christmas card that read: “Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. From Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.” Though clearly not an official release from the couple, the image still managed to stir controversy. Fans pointed out glaring mistakes, such as the unnatural bend of Lilibet’s knee and the distorted positioning of their hands behind their backs—common issues when AI struggles to render human figures accurately.

Social media erupted in criticism. One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Y’all creating AI images of other people’s children. Seek help. This is weird.” Another chimed in: “The kids don’t even look like brother and sister. They look like exactly what they are—AI.” A third person commented on the obvious imperfections in the hands and feet: “Hidden hands and feet are very strange. AI can’t do hands and feet properly yet.”

Further investigation revealed that the image had been created using an easily accessible template on the graphic design platform Canva. This discovery only added fuel to the fire, with many criticizing the use of AI to fabricate images of real children.

While the Sussexes have not commented on the image, the incident raises important questions about privacy in the digital age and the ethics of using AI to manipulate images of public figures, especially children.

One digital ethics expert, Dr. Sarah Collins, warned that this trend could lead to further invasions of privacy. “AI technology is advancing rapidly, but we must tread carefully,” Collins stated. “These kinds of images blur the line between reality and fiction, and in the case of children, the consequences could be far-reaching.”

The controversy over the image is part of a larger conversation about the role of AI in society, particularly in the realm of media and public figures. As technology continues to evolve, it’s clear that society will have to grapple with the complex ethical implications of AI-generated content.

For now, Harry and Meghan’s fans are left to navigate the blurry digital waters, with many calling for greater respect for the privacy of their young children.

  1. Whoa! Now wait just a minute! Royal children around the world have been photographed for years without harm. It’s just that Harry and Meghan suffer from a mental health issue known as paranoia. Poor Archie and Lilibet. Being hidden away. No one has a clue of what they look like. Prince William and Princess Kate haven’t hidden their children away, and no harm had come to them. They are lovely children, and it’s wonderful watching them grow into amazing adults! 👏
