Hollywood veteran Kelsey Grammer is stepping into the literary world with a deeply personal memoir, Karen: A Brother Remembers, a haunting yet hopeful tribute to his late sister, Karen Grammer.
Set for release in May 2025 under Harper Select, the book offers a raw, visceral exploration of love, loss, and resilience.
Grammer, best known for his iconic roles in Cheers and Frasier, isn’t just recounting a tragic chapter of his life. He’s inviting readers into the emotional core of his family’s history—a story marked by unimaginable heartbreak but underscored by enduring love.
“It’s not a grief book,” Grammer explains. “It’s a life book—a celebration of Karen’s life.”
Karen Grammer’s life was brutally cut short in July 1975. At just 18, she was working at a Red Lobster in Colorado Springs when she was kidnapped during a robbery. Over the next harrowing hours, she was raped, stabbed, and left to die.
At the time, Grammer was a 20-year-old drama student at Juilliard. News of Karen’s murder devastated him, setting off a lifelong battle with grief and trauma.
In his memoir, Grammer vividly recalls the last days he spent with Karen, painting a picture of a vibrant young woman whose life was senselessly stolen. “Karen is a vibrant, visceral, ecstatic recounting of my sister’s days until her final desecration,” Grammer says. “It poured from days long past, fresh and alive. Fifty years hence, I learned that love—our love—is forever.”
Grammer’s memoir doesn’t shy away from the horror of Karen’s death. But it also offers something more: hope. The actor opens up about the “long and arduous” path to healing, navigating a world forever altered by loss.
“It brought me great joy,” Grammer reveals. “To see her smile again—through my memories—that was really something. I hope this book might bring solace to others who have suffered similar horrors. From a loving brother, I invite you to meet Karen. To know her. To remember her with me.”
Karen: A Brother Remembers not only tells the story of a sister lost but also highlights Grammer’s resilience. According to the book’s publisher, it serves as “a testament to turning personal tragedy into a source of empowerment.”
Tragedy has been a constant shadow in Grammer’s life. His father, Frank Allen Grammer Jr., was murdered on his St. Thomas property in 1968. Years later, his half-brothers, Billy and Stephen Grammer, died in a suspected shark attack while scuba diving in the Virgin Islands.
Despite these devastating losses, Grammer credits his faith and family for helping him persevere. “I take a moment out every morning for gratitude,” he shared in a previous interview. “There’s a great Doobie Brothers line that goes, ‘You’ll always have a chance to give up. So why do it now?’”
Grammer’s forthcoming memoir promises to resonate with anyone who has experienced loss. It’s more than a tribute to a beloved sister—it’s a message of hope and healing.
“I wanted to tell Karen’s story,” Grammer says. “And to remind the world that even in the darkest moments, love remains.”
Karen: A Brother Remembers will be available nationwide on May 6, 2025. Preorders are now open at major booksellers.

Nobody gives a shit about his dead sister
Since Kelsey Grammer supported Trump I will never support another past or future effort of his! Enjoy being among the elite but do not pretend to relate to the masses!
