Once inseparable in the public eye, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appear to be charting separate professional paths—a move sparking both intrigue and concern among observers. On Wednesday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be on opposite coasts, each representing what looks like a deliberate effort to establish distinct identities.
Prince Harry will take center stage at The New York Times’ prestigious DealBook conference in New York, where he’ll discuss philanthropy and social impact. Meanwhile, Meghan will attend a glitzy gala in Los Angeles honoring her friend Tyler Perry, who famously provided the couple with a luxury home when they first left royal life.
Strategic Separation—or Something Else?
While their representatives declined to comment on the apparent shift, insiders believe this could mark a broader realignment. Harry is reportedly focusing on more “serious” philanthropic ventures, while Meghan leans into celebrity-driven, commercial opportunities.
Entertainment journalist Paula Froelich weighed in, telling The Daily Beast:
“Harry is thriving in the charity space, but Meghan? Not so much. It’s becoming clear that separating their brands might be a risk—especially if Meghan is constantly overshadowed by her husband.”
The Sussexes have faced a series of setbacks in their joint ventures. Meghan’s Archetypes podcast was canceled after just one season. Harry’s Heart of Invictus documentary failed to crack Netflix’s top 10. And Meghan’s ambitious animated project Pearl was axed before it even began production.
Even Meghan’s foray into lifestyle branding with her American Riviera Orchard jam and homeware line has hit a wall, tangled in trademark issues.
Their Latest Gamble: Polo
Next week, the couple will debut a Netflix documentary about polo, the aristocratic sport often criticized for its elitism. But the project has already drawn backlash from animal rights activists. PETA slammed the couple, pointing to a 2010 incident where a pony Harry was riding collapsed and died after a match.
Critics have called the show “baffling,” given Meghan’s outspoken stance against animal cruelty. In previous interviews, she proudly showcased her rescue hens, emphasizing her commitment to ethical animal treatment.
Marketing expert Tony Case sees this contradiction as part of a larger problem.
“The public is largely indifferent to Harry and Meghan now,” he said. “The comments under the Polo trailer aren’t just critical—they’re apathetic. That’s a bigger issue than bad press.”
“Drinking Their Own Kool-Aid”?
PR veteran Warren Johnson is more blunt in his assessment.
“Harry and Meghan as a couple were a brand multiplier—together, they were greater than the sum of their parts. But apart? You’ve got an estranged royal and a former actress turned jam maker. It’s not as compelling.”
Others, like New York-based image consultant Norah Lawlor, warn of deeper risks.
“Splitting their brand into ‘Harry’s serious work’ and ‘Meghan’s L.A. engagements’ could create a long-term divide—not just in their schedules, but in their goals and mindset.”
Crisis management expert Drew Kerr believes it’s too early to sound the alarm, though.
“A few separate appearances don’t mean much. Adults are allowed to have independent careers. But if it continues for weeks without explanation, people will start speculating—and not in a good way.”
He added,
“When public figures stop communicating, the silence becomes the story. They’re letting social media and the press control the narrative.”
The Shadow of Royal Drama
Ultimately, the couple’s brand remains entangled with the very institution they left behind. Many believe their ongoing feud with the royal family overshadows their charitable work and media ventures. Without a public reconciliation, their personal lives will continue to attract more attention than their professional endeavors.
As Froelich put it:
“The world isn’t interested in their latest project. What people want to see is whether they can put aside the drama, reconcile with their families, and move forward. Until then, the ‘estranged royal and Hollywood actress’ narrative will dominate.”
For now, the Sussexes seem determined to carve out separate identities. But whether the world will embrace them as individuals—or simply as a couple in crisis—remains to be seen.
