In a shocking revelation, beloved actor Alan Tudyk has shared details of a life-threatening allergic reaction he suffered during the filming of the 1998 comedy Patch Adams.
The actor, now 53, recounted the harrowing incident during an appearance on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meal YouTube series.
Tudyk, celebrated for his roles in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and A Knight’s Tale, had just landed his first major Hollywood role alongside comedy legend Robin Williams.
But instead of basking in his success, Tudyk found himself in a medical emergency that nearly ended his career before it began.
Reflecting on the chaotic series of events that led to the allergic reaction, Tudyk recalled, “I had a bad Chinese meal one night. The next day, I celebrated landing the role by eating a lot of chocolate and drinking scotch. That was the whole dinner.”
The consequences of the indulgence were immediate and severe. While getting ready in the makeup chair, Tudyk noticed alarming symptoms. “My windpipe started closing up. I was having trouble breathing, and hives were spreading all over my neck and scalp,” he said.
A set medic’s grim warning intensified the urgency. “You’re going to die. You’re going to suffocate from that,” Tudyk remembered hearing. He was rushed to a doctor, who administered an adrenaline shot, saving his life.
Despite the ordeal, Tudyk returned to set to film a scene where he played a psychiatric patient opposite Williams. “If you watch the first few minutes of the movie, you can see it. My eyes are rolling back in my head as the adrenaline wears off,” he said.
In a 2019 interview with The A.V. Club, Tudyk described the experience as both terrifying and surreal. “It was my first big break. Everything was new—craft services, staying in a nice hotel, and working with Robin Williams. My girlfriend even flew out to celebrate. She brought chocolates, which turned out to be the worst thing for my hives.”
The doctor’s advice—“Avoid brown liquors and chocolate”—was ignored, Tudyk joked, adding, “You just described my dinner.”
The incident marked a dramatic beginning to Tudyk’s career, offering a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life behind the scenes in Hollywood. Despite the challenges, Tudyk emerged with a tale as compelling as his performances on screen.
