A deep-sea creature nicknamed the “Doomsday Fish” is turning up on California’s beaches, sparking fears rooted in folklore. The oarfish, an enormous serpent-like species that can grow up to 30 feet long, has appeared three times since August along Southern California’s coast. For a species that typically lives at depths of 300 to 3,000 feet, such frequent beachings are highly unusual.

Until now, sightings were exceedingly rare. Since 1901, only 19 oarfish had been documented along the California coast, according to UC San Diego’s Scripps Oceanography researchers. Yet, in just a few months, three have surfaced—one in La Jolla in August, another in Huntington Beach in September, and the most recent on Encinitas Beach in November. This sudden surge has baffled scientists.

Ben Frable, manager of Scripps’ Marine Vertebrate Collection, speculates that natural cycles like El Niño could be driving these creatures closer to shore. These weather patterns, known for their effects on ocean currents and temperatures, often disrupt marine life. However, Frable admits there’s no definitive answer, leaving plenty of room for speculation.

And speculation is running wild. In Japan, the oarfish is steeped in legend, known as “Ryugu no Tsukai,” or the “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace.” According to Japanese folklore, the creature’s appearance precedes major earthquakes. Before the catastrophic 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, which killed over 18,500 people, at least 20 oarfish reportedly washed ashore.

A 2019 study by Tokai University and the University of Shizuoka acknowledged this folklore but found no scientific proof linking oarfish sightings to seismic activity. Still, many remain convinced. “If this folklore is true, these appearances could be critical for disaster mitigation,” researchers noted.

Could these recent California sightings be a warning? While no scientific evidence supports the earthquake theory, history offers chilling parallels. Consider the 2011 quake or the devastating 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, both of which were reportedly preceded by strange marine phenomena.

With California sitting on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, home to 90% of the world’s earthquakes, such omens feel particularly unsettling. Could the Doomsday Fish be signaling something ominous beneath the surface? Only time will tell. Until then, the sight of these giant, ghostly creatures on our shores is enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine.
