Sweden and Finland are urging their citizens to brace for the unthinkable: war. As Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine drags into its third year, these Nordic nations are taking unprecedented steps to bolster their national preparedness.
In Stockholm, the Swedish government has reissued its war preparedness guide, “In Case of Crisis or War.” This pamphlet, first distributed during World War II, was last updated in 2018. Now, it has been doubled in length, growing to 32 pages, with detailed instructions on how to survive a national emergency.
It will be mailed to over 5 million households in the coming weeks. Swedish Minister for Civil Defense Carl-Oskar Bohlin described the update as crucial, saying, “The security situation is serious, and we must all strengthen our resilience to face crises and, ultimately, war.”
Neutrality Abandoned: Sweden and Finland Join NATO
This escalation follows Sweden and Finland’s historic decision to join NATO last year. For decades, both nations remained neutral, even during the height of the Cold War. But Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shattered that stance. The Kremlin’s aggression reignited fears of a broader conflict, forcing Stockholm and Helsinki to reconsider their policies.
Sweden’s updated guide urges citizens to stockpile essentials such as food, medicine, and hygiene supplies. Special attention is given to vulnerable groups, including families with young children. Mikael Frisell, head of Sweden’s Civil Contingencies Agency, emphasized that preparedness is everyone’s responsibility, noting that no one is immune to the ripple effects of war.
Finland Follows Suit
Meanwhile, Finland, which shares an 830-mile border with Russia, has also ramped up its crisis readiness efforts. Helsinki recently published its own survival guide, available online, outlining government plans for war and practical advice for citizens. Alarmingly, a September survey revealed that only 58% of Finns are adequately prepared for emergencies, highlighting the urgency of the government’s warnings.
Norway Joins the Preparedness Wave
Sweden and Finland aren’t alone. Earlier this year, Norway, another NATO member, sent out 2.2 million pamphlets with advice on surviving a week without outside assistance. Norway’s guidance focuses on managing disruptions in food and power supplies—scenarios that seemed improbable just a few years ago but now feel disturbingly plausible.
Why the Urgency?
The timing of these warnings is no coincidence. Russia currently occupies about 20% of Ukraine, and its military shows no signs of retreating. Moscow’s slow but relentless advances have sent shockwaves through Europe, especially in nations with historical ties to the Kremlin’s territorial ambitions.
Sweden and Finland have reason to worry. During World War II, Finland fought two wars against the Soviet Union, losing significant territory in the process. Sweden, while officially neutral, quietly supported Finland during those conflicts. Now, both nations fear history could repeat itself if Vladimir Putin decides to expand his reach beyond Ukraine.

While Sweden and Finland prepare their citizens for the realities of modern warfare, the situation underscores a sharp contrast with the United States. Here, public attention often drifts between fleeting domestic issues, leaving many Americans unaware of the stark warnings coming from Europe. Sweden and Finland’s actions serve as a sobering reminder: complacency is not an option in an increasingly unstable world.

How do you come up with this crap??? Too many drugs in years past would be my guess. Russia has no desire to start a world war, and because of the treaties following WWII they already control Finland and have a lot to say about Sweden\’s government. I\’m guessing you got stuck in cold war hysteria. China is our current threat, and they will fight us, economically, not with bombs. They actually seem to be winning, which is scary. Since you are stuck in history, I suggest you get used to your purchases being made in Chinese yens. The Chinese will not \”take over\” the USA but will dictate our economy. Do you own a car made in Chine yet? That change will happen soon enough. Gert used to it. Since your heads are buried in the sand you might not even see it happen. They have already surpassed Russia economically and their major competitor now ius India. Because of those two country\’s economic pushes, little may matter, over time, as resources become scarcer and scarcer. With your head so far into the sand perhaps you won\’t even notice.
