Her mother, Mayumi Doheny, had traveled with her to help her settle in and was there when the unthinkable happened. At lunchtime, she received a frantic call: her daughter had suffered a catastrophic allergic reaction and was being rushed to a hospital. Despite Aika’s desperate attempts to save herself with an EpiPen and inhaler, she couldn’t fight off the reaction. By the end of the day, her life hung by a thread.
