Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has expressed that she expected an open primary race would follow President Joe Biden’s eventual exit, rather than a streamlined endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Pelosi’s comments, shared in an interview with The New York Times podcast The Interview, shed light on the complicated dynamics and internal frustrations within the Democratic Party.

“The anticipation was that, if the president were to step aside, there would be an open primary,” Pelosi stated, highlighting the broader expectation among Democratic leaders that a competitive race could unfold if Biden had stepped down earlier. The full interview is set to air on Saturday.

Pelosi emphasized that the course of events might have unfolded differently if a primary had materialized. Speaking on Harris’s potential in such a scenario, she remarked, “Kamala may have, I think she would have done well in that and been stronger going forward. But we don’t know that. That didn’t happen. We live with what happened.”

Biden’s decision to endorse Harris immediately, Pelosi pointed out, complicated any possibility of an open primary. The endorsement was almost instantaneous, effectively shutting down alternative paths for party contenders, even as whispers about Biden’s mental fitness began to ripple through Democratic circles in mid-2024. By July, concerns over his cognitive agility had reached a boiling point, with prominent voices, including Pelosi herself, encouraging him to step aside.

“Biden’s backing of Harris,” Pelosi explained, “really made it almost impossible to have a primary at that time.” The endorsement closed ranks and silenced emerging demands for competitive leadership options.

These comments come amid wider criticism of the Democratic Party’s approach to connecting with voters. Notably, Senator Bernie Sanders issued a harsh rebuke following Harris’s election loss, blaming cultural issues and disconnection from working-class Americans.

“It should come to no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working-class people would find that the working class has abandoned them,” Sanders wrote in a pointed post on social media. He accused the party of prioritizing the status quo while Americans demand real change.

Pelosi was quick to defend her party against Sanders’ criticisms. “With all due respect,” she responded, “and I have a great deal of respect for him, for what he stands for, but I don’t respect him saying that the Democratic Party has abandoned working-class families.”

Pelosi underscored her belief that the Democratic Party remains committed to working-class issues, despite divisions over cultural priorities.

The tension between centrist and progressive Democrats reveals deeper fractures within the party, hinting at a complicated road ahead. The question remains: how will Democrats reconcile these divides and regain the trust of voters who feel left behind?

As Pelosi’s reflections indicate, the party’s path forward may require a hard look at both strategy and messaging.

  1. You are the one who is to blame, and you are the one that is at fault for the January 6, you are the one that should be impeached and get yourself out of the capital.

  2. If Pelosi had not encouraged President Biden to NOT run for a second term the election may have turned out differently. U S A is not ready for a woman President.

  3. Say \”goodnight\” Nancy! You\’re old, washed up, and you\’re coup failed! It\’s the policies stupid!!

  4. I think it\’s rich of Pelosi to say now after the election that she thought there would of been an open primary after pushing Biden out & not saying something way sooner.

  5. Nancy is lying, they knew they’d have to go with Kamala so that Bidens war chest would go to her. They wouldn’t have had enough money for Kamala’s campaign otherwise. But they left an incredibly stupid group in charge, who thought American’s votes could be bought with that $$. They were (to our relief) wrong.

  6. Nancy piglosi needs to stay out of politics. She’s always been mouthy but noone listens to her. Just a waste of air
