Director Adam McKay, known for hits like The Big Short and Don’t Look Up, shocked followers with a fierce critique of the Democratic Party as election results showed former President Donald Trump edging closer to another victory.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), McKay declared, “It is time to abandon the Dem Party.” He added that he plans to register with the Green Party or Working Families, though he remains “open to ideas.” The post included a link for updating voter registration, symbolizing McKay’s bold departure from his long-time affiliation with the Democrats.

McKay’s shift is a striking one, given his history of supporting progressive causes within the Democratic fold. The Oscar-winning filmmaker backed Bernie Sanders in both 2016 and 2020 and even joined the Democratic Socialists of America in 2019.

Just last month, he signed an open letter urging President Joe Biden to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing his concerns about global conflicts and climate action.

But McKay’s frustration with the Democratic Party appears to have reached a boiling point. “Who would have guessed lying about Biden’s cognitive health for 2 yrs, refusing to do an open convention for a new nominee, never mentioning public healthcare & embracing fracking, the Cheneys & a yr long slaughter of children in Gaza wouldn’t be a winning strategy?” McKay fired off earlier in the night. “Anyone with half a brain?”

Critics and supporters alike quickly weighed in on the post, with some lauding McKay’s candor and others accusing him of playing into divisive rhetoric. “Liberals think they’re the ‘smart’ ones,” he jabbed further. “They actually just blindly cheer the parade of rickety optics wrapped up in New York Times fonts that is the modern Dem Party.”

McKay’s disillusionment isn’t just about strategy; it cuts to the heart of a party he sees as bogged down by career politicians and “dusty hacks.” Predicting the likely post-election blame game, he added, “At least it’s time for the dusty hacks & careerists to spread their feathers wide post election and blame Russia and third party candidates. That should fix things.”

As votes tallied late into the night, Trump surged ahead, securing Pennsylvania and pushing his total to 267 electoral votes, just shy of the winning 270 threshold. Early on Wednesday morning, he declared victory, telling his supporters, “This is a movement like no one has ever seen before. We’re going to help our country heal—it needs help, and it needs it very badly.”

McKay’s break from the Democrats echoes wider dissatisfaction among voters disillusioned by the party’s approach, particularly on issues like healthcare, foreign policy, and climate change.

Political analysts are calling McKay’s high-profile split a symbol of the frustration that many progressives feel, a frustration that could shape the future of America’s political landscape.

  1. It is time to do away with parties. Nearly all the contention and controversy is BETWEEN parties. Each party is fueled by outside parties (not talking individuals here) who can pump millions of dollars into a party to influence their votes or opinions. When this is done the party no longer represents the individuals who voted them into office. Thus, they become untrustworthy of any decision they may make “for the people”.
