A Pennsylvania man has been arrested on charges of murder and attempted homicide after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death over a trivial dispute—her haircut.
Carmen Martinez-Silva, 50, was found lifeless in her East Hempfield Township home on Sunday, November 3. Authorities confirmed her death, although her identity was revealed later by family members through a GoFundMe campaign. Local media outlets, including Lancaster Online and PennLive, also confirmed her name.
Benjamin Garcia, 49, is now in custody for the gruesome crime, though his full name appears as Garcia Gual in some reports. He’s facing a series of charges including criminal homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and endangering another person, all stemming from this shocking act of violence.
The Chain of Events
Police arrived at the home after receiving frantic calls reporting a stabbing incident. Witnesses claimed Garcia was found “standing there with a knife in hand” at the crime scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered Martinez-Silva’s body and her brother, Luis Martinez-Silva, severely wounded. The victim’s brother is expected to survive his injuries. Garcia was allegedly holding a silver kitchen knife, as detailed in court documents.
The shocking motive behind the crime was revealed by the victim’s daughter, who told police that Garcia’s violent outburst was sparked by a disagreement over a haircut. According to the affidavit, Garcia had threatened Martinez-Silva the night before, stating he would stab her over the change in her appearance.
A relative of Martinez-Silva’s confirmed this account, saying: “Carmen cut her hair, which angered Benjamin. He told her he was going to stab her.”
The Fatal Confrontation
Martinez-Silva had reportedly spent the night at her daughter’s home due to fears of Garcia’s violent tendencies. On the morning of the murder, she decided to confront her abuser, intending to leave him for good. She visited her brother’s house, where she informed another family member, Hector Burgos, to let Garcia know she was ending their relationship.
However, when Garcia couldn’t be found at his residence, he went looking for Martinez-Silva at Luis’ home. Fearing for her safety, Luis told Garcia that his sister wasn’t there. Garcia initially left, only to return shortly after, allegedly attacking Luis when he learned of the lie.
In the ensuing struggle, Martinez-Silva attempted to intervene to protect her brother, but was tragically stabbed by Garcia in the process. Witnesses said Garcia also lunged at Burgos and another bystander, but missed both times.
A Family in Mourning
The victim’s family, devastated by the senseless loss, is now raising funds to give Martinez-Silva a proper funeral. A message shared on GoFundMe stated: “The family is devastated by this loss. We would’ve never imagined a tragedy like this would happen to our beloved Carmen.”
As for Garcia, online court records show he remains in custody without bond, with no defense attorney listed yet. Authorities have not indicated whether Garcia has entered a plea.
